Chapter 150: Isn't That Just Crazy?
Lia remained silent for a long time. Her pale complexion made it hard to tell if she was sad or simply stunned. Then came the breakup.
A flicker of panic crossed Marcus's eyes, but he forced a casual smile. "Don't overthink it," he explained. "I really do like you. Even though we haven't been dating long, I've thought about our future. It's probably better if you don't know the reason for the breakup. I'd like to stay friends, butwell, that seems impossible. Don't be like this, okay? Take care of yourself."
Tears welled up in Lia's eyes. She had only wanted her boyfriend to meet her best friend; now, she felt utterly humiliated. Before she could react, Bella exploded. "If you're breaking up with her, at least give her a clear reason! What's with this vague nonsense?"
Marcus rubbed his face in frustration. "Fine. Since you're asking, I won't hide it anymore. I didn't want to leave it hanging, either. Someone warned me to stay away from you, and told me not to tell you why. This falls under that warning, but I've already prepared for the worst. I won't stay for this meal. Your ex-boyfriend broke up with you just as mysteriously, Lia. Maybe you should consider who you've offended. I'll leave first."
After Marcus drove away, Lia burst into tears. "Who could I have offended? I must have upset God! If not, why do I keep running into these issues?"
Bella handed her a tissue. "Don't cry. Let me think. It's true that Oscar also broke up with you out of nowhere. Even though he gave you a reason, it was so contradictory. Dominic mentioned there might be more to Oscar's breakup with you. Now that Marcus has done the same, you really should think about who you've crossed."
Lia, still upset, sniffed. "How would I know? I'm just an ordinary person. What big shots could I have offended? Marcus comes from a wealthy family, and money rules everything these days! If it's someone even he couldn't handle, how could I?"
Bella also found it strange. Just hours ago, Marcus had been affectionate; now, he was breaking up with Lia without hesitation. What kind of person were they up against?
As Bella pondered, Lia had a thought. "What about Leonard? Does he count?"
Bella frowned. "I don't think so. Even if he's a big shot, he wouldn't target a harmless woman like you, right? He wouldn't let something like that bother him. Besides, why would he keep interfering with your love life? Isn't that just crazy?"
Lia felt defeated. "Who else could it be if it isn't him? He's the only big shot I've upset. Marcus must know who it is; he just doesn't want to tell me. I'll try asking him."
Lia called Marcus. Once he answered, she went straight to the point: "Is it Leonard?"
There was a long pause before Marcus replied, "The person who warned me said I can't afford to mess with the Sawyer family. I don't know much more than that. If that's all, I'm hanging up now."
After the call ended, Lia turned to Bella, crying, "It's Leonard! Marcus said it's the Sawyer family! Who else in Joville has that kind of power besides Leonard's family? He's the only one I've offended from that family!"
Bella was at a loss. One was her best friend, the other someone she had a connection with. She didn't know what to do.
After a moment, she said, "Okay, let me call him and ask. Don't get too worked up, okay? What if there's been some kind of misunderstanding?"
