Chapter 48: He Scares Me
Bella's face flushed crimson. "Are you going to the bathroom or not?"
Leonard stifled a laugh as he walked into the bathroom. He didn't even bother to close the door properly before using the toilet.
Bella rushed over and slammed the door shut. "I've had it with you!"
Once he was done, he slipped back into bed and fell asleep again. Bella couldn't help but feel butterflies in her stomach as she thought about what had happened the night before. When she left the house, she deliberately wore a scarf to hide the hickey on her neck. She tried not to think about it, but Damien's figure kept intruding on her mind.
In the afternoon, the Sawyers arrived at the hospital with a kidney donor—Pierce Sawyer, the eldest son of the family.
Pierce had blond hair and blue eyes, and he wore his slightly long hair in a ponytail, revealing his smooth forehead. His features were well-defined, with a high nose bridge and fair skin. He was strikingly handsome. His tattoos, which peeked out from underneath his clothes, covered his ears, neck, and the back of his hands. His imposing presence made it difficult for people to meet his gaze. When he learned that Bella was Daniel's attending physician, he walked into her office with two of his subordinates. "Hello, Ms. Jones. I'm Sawyer's eldest son, here to donate my kidney to him. I'll leave the rest in your capable hands."
Caught off guard, she couldn't find her voice for a while. Leonard arrived just in time. "Alright, you guys can leave now. I'll take it from here." He gave Leonard a long, deliberate look before saying, "Remember our deal. I'm giving you a fair warning; don't go back on your word." Leonard responded, "Believe it or not, if it weren't for the fact that Xavier just got married and still needs his kidneys, I wouldn't have bothered coming here." He smirked and left with his subordinates.
Bella downed more than half a glass of cold water before she regained her composure. "L-Leonard, Chapter Father… I wouldn't mind if it was your mother, either. But your brother… you can be the one to deal with me should anything concerning your family arise."
Leonard hurriedly reassured her, "There won't be a next time. I'll take care of the paperwork and payment. If anything comes up…"
Bella wrung her hands, urging him to go ahead. She couldn't help but wonder if she would even be able to see another sunrise were Daniel to die on her watch.
Before the surgery, she needed to get blood samples from Daniel and Pierce. The nurse was on the verge of tears as she tried to insert the needle into Pierce's heavily tattooed arm, struggling to find a vein. His intimidating presence made her so nervous that it became almost impossible for her to proceed.
After several failed attempts, the head nurse had to step in, but even she needed several tries before successfully drawing his blood. Currently, they were just preparing for the surgery. The intensive care unit reported that Daniel had regained consciousness and was out of immediate danger from the cardiac surgery. However, he needed a few more days to recover before they could proceed with the kidney transplant. Bella was so stressed that she couldn't help but think, "Of all the people in this hospital, why did this have to happen to her?"
The Sawyers had chosen her because she was Daniel's adopted daughter. She knew she couldn't run away, so she had to face it head-on, no matter how scared she was. When she went to pick up the lab report, she ran into Simon in the laboratory department. The world was really that small.
As soon as he saw her, he silently added the lab report in his hand to hers. "What a coincidence, Bella. Do you work here?"
Bella nodded without saying a word.
"A friend of mine is in the hospital, so I came to visit him and help him pick up his lab report. Go ahead and get back to work; I won't bother you. Let's catch up when you have some free time."
