Erin sighed, chiming in, “Yeah, Ophelia, I know there were some small conflicts between you and Bessie before, but that was all in the past. Bessie has already been punished, so why are you still unwilling to let it go?”

Ophelia felt a bit annoyed. Here they come again, this mother and daughter, as if they could do nothing but pretend to be pitiful and weak to gain men’s sympathy. She mockingly tugged at her lip, just about to speak when Xander suddenly interjected, “Ophelia, that’s enough!”

His gaze was as cold as ice, devoid of warmth, as he looked at Ophelia. “When did it become your business to meddle in my affairs? What happens between Bessie and me is none of your concern.”

“If you still can’t accept it, then I will tell you today that I was going to get engaged to Bessie. I wanted her, and no one could shake my decision!” He directly reprimanded Ophelia and expressed his determination regarding Bessie.

Erin and Bessie immediately smiled with satisfaction and glanced at Ophelia with pride. Ophelia’s lips were slightly pressed.

Lenora finally couldn’t hold back and said angrily, “Brother! How could you say that? Cousin is only doing this for your own good; Bessie is not a good person at all!”

Xander frowned, looking genuinely angry. He even scolded his sister, whom he usually adored. “Nora, what are you meddling in? I don’t care what you’ve heard from others; I have made up my mind about Bessie. From now on, you should call her sister-in-law. Don’t be so rude!”

“Besides,” he shot a cold glance at Ophelia, “I told you not to associate with her. Did you take my words as mere wind in your ears?”

Lenora’s eyes turned red; she was angry. She still wanted to say something, but Xander lost his patience. The moment he saw Ophelia, he felt irritated and didn’t want to stay any longer. He said to his sister, “I have something to do today, so you hurry up and go home by yourself!”

After saying that, he turned to Bessie and said, “I’ll go in and see what other styles there are.”

Bessie smiled gently and shyly, “Alright, Xander, you go.”

Xander didn’t glance at Ophelia much and turned to walk into the store. Lenora was extremely angry and turned her head, “Cousin…”

“It’s okay,” Ophelia said soothingly, even managing a small smile. Despite having seen Xander and Bessie choose wedding dresses, she still appeared completely unhurried. She glanced at Erin and Bessie and gave a cold smile with a slight curl of her lips.

Bessie felt a sudden unease in her heart, sensing something ominous. But soon she comforted herself, thinking that Xander was determined to be with her, willing to sever ties with the Whitaker family in order to get engaged to her. There was no way this could change, so what was she afraid of?

So she straightened her back again and smiled gently, saying, “Ophelia, I knew you hated me, but whether you liked it or not, you probably had to call me sister-in-law from now on… Oh no, I misspoke; it seems Xander doesn’t even recognize you as his cousin anymore!”

Erin also laughed, “Bessie, don’t say that. Aren’t you just reopening Ophelia’s wounds? You’re about to become the lady of the Whitaker family; how can you be so indiscreet!” The tone was half angry and half playful, yet there was not a hint of blame; instead, it conveyed a strong sense of pride.
