Chapter 35: Bessie’s True Colors Were Revealed

“Did you have anything else to say?!” Samuel slammed the table and asked Ophelia.

“Have I not told you how serious the consequences of angering Mr. Winford were?! How could you still dare to plan to elope!”

“Your sister kindly tried to help you make up for it, almost sacrificing herself, and you actually had the nerve to slander her!”

Ophelia didn’t even furrow her brow. “I said I had no intention of eloping,” she stated.

“Still not admitting it? Just now you wanted to find Roger, and now… Roger has already exposed you. You still refuse to admit it! Roger is someone your mother left behind, and he has cared for you a lot over the years. Could he really slander you?!”

Roger displayed a helpless expression. Bessie quietly curled the corners of her lips.

Ophelia let out a light scoff. “Who said he wouldn’t slander me?”

Indeed, if it hadn’t been for her mother, Roger would have been killed by the debt collectors long ago. But isn’t there a term in the world called “wolf-hearted and dog-lunged”?

“Ms. Ophelia…” Roger wanted to defend himself.

Ophelia, however, did not intend to listen to his nonsense. She walked straight over and reached out her hand to him, saying, “Give me your phone.”

Roger froze. “What?”

“You said you didn’t lie, right? Then let me check your phone. What are you afraid of?”

Ophelia knew that Roger was a cautious person, and since he had helped Bessie, he must have saved evidence on his phone! The other party’s reaction also proved that her guess was correct. Roger remained still; a faint sheen of cold sweat appeared on his forehead.

“Roger?” Ophelia called out coolly.

Bessie hurriedly spoke up, “Ophelia, you are not a police officer. Checking someone else’s phone without permission is disrespectful to their privacy…”

“If it was ultimately proven that I had wronged someone, then I would apologize,” Ophelia said.

Bessie was instantly left speechless. She had said it to this extent, yet Roger still did not move, which made his reaction somewhat suspicious. Is the so-called privacy more important than innocence?

Seeing the growing doubt in Samuel’s eyes, Roger had no choice but to grit his teeth and hand over his phone. Bessie clenched her fist, her heart racing. Seeing Roger’s reaction, she couldn’t help but curse inwardly, “What an idiot! Could there really be something in his phone?!”

Feeling anxious, Roger secretly prayed that he had hidden himself well enough that Ms. Ophelia might not be able to find him.

“Ah, what is this?” Ophelia suddenly spoke up. Roger and Bessie both felt a sudden jolt in their hearts. Ophelia directly handed the phone to Samuel.

What she found were several text messages that Bessie had sent to Roger on the day she got married and moved to Sunset Vista. Bessie asked how things were, and Roger replied that Ophelia’s attitude had wavered and she seemed not to want to go with Cullen anymore. Bessie immediately instructed that no matter what method Roger used, he must persuade Ophelia to elope!

Samuel’s face turned pale. “–Bessie, what is this?!”

“I…” Bessie turned pale and wanted to argue, “I saw how much Ophelia liked Mr. Cullen, and I thought she wouldn’t be happy marrying Mr. Winford, so I wanted to help her…”

“Don’t say it’s to help me! I never said I wanted to elope!” Ophelia pouted.

At this point, everyone understood that Bessie was interested in Ophelia’s engagement, so she tried every possible way to incite her to elope, hoping to replace her and marry into Sunset Vista! The servants exchanged glances, and disdain was evident in their eyes.

I never expected it! Ms. Bessie, who usually appeared simple and kind, turned out to be this kind of person!

Even Samuel, at that moment, looked at his daughter with a strange expression.

Bessie felt anxious under his gaze, “Dad, I…”

“Enough!” Samuel’s face looked very grim. “Haven’t I ever told you about the stakes involved? Fortunately, Ophelia didn’t listen to you. Have you even thought about what would happen to us, the Greene family, if she really eloped with someone?”

Replacing Ophelia? Did she think Mr. Winford was that easy to fool?! Bessie was scolded until her face turned pale.

Erin felt sorry for her daughter and hurriedly hugged her, “Honey, Bessie was still sick…”

Samuel, filled with anger, barely managed to suppress it. Seeing Bessie’s weak and frightened appearance, he ultimately felt a pang of sympathy and said, “Reflect on your actions properly!”

He turned around and was met with Ophelia’s mocking gaze, which caused him to pause for a moment, feeling inexplicably guilty. Feeling guilty and somewhat angry, he was her father! How could she look at him with such eyes?!

He said unhappily, “This time it was Bessie who was wrong, and I scolded her too. Don’t be so narrow-minded and hold a grudge against her!”

If it had been in her past life, Ophelia would not have known how sad she would have felt upon hearing those words! But now, there was no longer any expectation for this father in my heart. I only felt mockery and absurdity.

“Did you scold her? Did you make her reflect on that sentence? And then what?”

Samuel’s face couldn’t hold its composure, “What, are you still going to teach me how to do things?!”

“I wouldn’t dare!” Ophelia scoffed, “After all, this is your precious daughter. I know you can’t bear to punish her.”

“However, do you think Mr. Winford knew about this matter? I hope that when Mr. Winford got angry and wanted the Greene family to pay the price, you still felt this way about her!”

Samuel’s expression suddenly changed. Thinking of Mr. Winford’s anger and the consequences the Greene family would face, his gaze at Bessie lost the tenderness it had just moments ago, leaving only a shadow of gloom.

Bessie clenched her fists, not expecting that Ophelia, that little bitch, could change Samuel’s attitude completely with just two sentences! She felt anxious in her heart and forced a flattering smile, “Dad…”

Samuel’s expression showed no signs of softening. Ophelia quietly curled the corners of her lips, her heart filled with mockery. Her father had always prioritized benefit above all else. She had buried such a big thorn, and from then on, Bessie could forget about having it easy!

She turned her head and saw Roger on the side. Her gaze turned cold again as she said directly, “Roger, starting from tomorrow, you don’t need to come to the Greene family anymore. You have been fired!”

“Ms. Ophelia…?!” Roger’s face changed dramatically. Others also looked over.

Ophelia looked at him coldly and said, “Back then, when your father owed gambling debts and the creditors nearly drove you and your mother to death, it was my mother who helped your family pay off those debts and got you this job. But you were ungrateful and heartless. Now you are colluding with some malicious people to harm me. What use is there in keeping you around?”

“Even though I didn’t rush you, do you still have the face to continue staying in the Greene family?”

Roger was unwilling to give up and wanted to struggle a bit, “Now the Greene family was under the master’s control…”

Ophelia almost laughed. At such an old age, how could he still be so naive? It was already a miracle that Samuel didn’t kill him; how could he still keep him around?

She turned to Samuel and said, “Dad, did you want to keep using him?”

As expected, Samuel said, “Get out now, you are fired!”

The marriage between Ophelia and Sunset Vista was almost ruined. He was reluctant to touch Bessie, the culprit, and was feeling quite angry. Meanwhile, Roger, the accomplice, had the audacity to come forward; wasn’t that just asking for trouble?
