Chapter 36
The partner at Golden Concord, a Dunville University alumnus, had heard Yasmin stepped down from the project team and called to inquire.
“It’s due to personal reasons,” Yasmin replied, unwilling to elaborate.
“Yasmin, work isn’t like school. Some career opportunities are fleeting. I heard you were injured, so I’m giving you a week off. Please give me your answer by next Monday. You’re very capable; I wouldn’t offer this to just anyone.”
“Thank you. I’ll consider it carefully,” Yasmin replied, understanding his implication.
She could only complete her Mayford Acquisition project team training. However, rejoining depended on carefully managing her relationship with Caleb. Failure to do so would eliminate her chances.
Gracie’s birthday celebration was Saturday. Harris knocked on Yasmin’s door Friday morning.
“Mrs. Grant, Mr. Grant asked me to collect you and take you to the Grant residence.”
Yasmin replied sarcastically, “When did you become an assistant? The banquet is tomorrow; I’ll be there on time.”
Harris smiled, continuing, “The Grant family has many rules. Close relatives are expected today. In fact, Mr. Grant Senior requested you and Mr. Grant return early to accompany Mrs. Grant Senior.”
Yasmin couldn’t refuse Benjamin and Gracie’s request.
The Maybach waited downstairs. Harris opened the back door for her.
As Yasmin sat, Caleb, reviewing a document on his tablet, glanced up.
“After the birthday banquet, I’ll speak with Mrs. Grant Senior, Caleb. I hope your lawyer will be available,” Yasmin said calmly. It had to be after the banquet to avoid spoiling Gracie’s birthday.
Caleb lifted his gaze, meeting hers.
“Is something wrong?”
Yasmin laughed, frustrated. “Caleb, you wouldn’t go back on your word again, would you? Is that a male specialty?” Caleb pointed at his tablet. “I’m in a meeting.”
Yasmin noticed a small video call window in the screen’s lower-right corner, previously obscured by Caleb’s hand.
“Mr. Grant?” a man called hesitantly.
Yasmin was speechless. Did the other person hear her? Caleb seemed oblivious. He turned to Yasmin. “When have I ever gone back on my word?”
Yasmin nearly choked. Why was he asking?
She glared at Harris, who hadn’t warned her. Both he and Caleb were conspiring to create this awkward situation!
Harris looked at Yasmin innocently.
She remained silent for the rest of the journey.
The Grant residence, nestled amidst picturesque mountains and water, was built in traditional style, its sprawling grounds, ornate carvings, and lavish decorations exuding grandeur.
Several luxury cars were already parked; household staff managed parking.
Yasmin exited the car and bent to retrieve her gift. Before she could, someone took the box, holding it with one arm while grasping her hand with the other.
“Caleb, what—”
Yasmin instinctively pulled away, when a female voice called cheerfully, “Caleb!”
A young woman in a designer gown, adorned with a diamond necklace, approached. She possessed a doll-like face with large eyes, bangs, and a princess-style updo, exuding a cute, spoiled charm.
Caleb didn’t release Yasmin’s hand, tightening his grip as they walked, their silent tug-of-war continuing. When someone passed, Yasmin stopped struggling and smiled.
