Chapter 97
Vespera was once again caught off guard. She messaged Rebecca, telling her that she had been rescued and was currently on her way back to Hack.
Naturally, Rebecca was curious as to who had rescued her. After all, she had already traveled this far, and in this world, who else but her foolish childhood friend would see her in the middle of the night? She parked her car by the roadside and asked, “Who saved you?”
Vespera hesitated, wanting to brush past the question to avoid any wild guesses. But dodging it would only make her seem guilty at some point. But what did she have to feel guilty about? With a clear conscience, she typed the name, Dominic.
On the other end, Rebecca practically lit up with excitement, as if she had just witnessed her favorite couple getting together in real life. “What’s going on? What’s going on? Dominic? He came to save you? Isn’t your boss being a little too caring toward his employer?”
Vespera replied, “Because I’m the company’s valuable asset.”
“Then if you make another great contribution, will he offer himself to you?” Rebecca continued, “With benefits like this, I don’t want to be a lawyer anymore. Ask him if he’s hitting on you.”
Vespera did not reply.
“I’m betting my shirt that he’s interested in you!”
Vespera finally replied: “I forbid you from saying something so disgusting. Believe it or not, he’s just a genuinely good person who likes to help others. Besides, he’s not into…”
Rebecca responded with a series of question marks. Vespera glared at her phone. She looked at the previous message she had sent and regretted it. Whether it was true or not that he didn’t like women anymore, it was something he had shared with her. Spreading it with someone somehow felt wrong.
Dominic noted the worried and troubled expression on her face. He then asked, “What’s wrong?”
Vespera shook her head quickly as she pressed her phone to her chest. “Nothing, nothing at all.”
Dominic squinted slightly, observing her guilty demeanor.
Meanwhile, on the other side, Lake finally returned with a bag of food, only to find the car empty, with the trunk left open. Furious, he hurled the bag to the ground. Wasn’t she in a wheelchair today? Wasn’t she supposed to be injured? This har! But if she could walk now, she wouldn’t have gotten hurt.
Just then, something occurred to her: what if she encountered danger? The mountains were unpredictable, with wild dogs or boars roaming around. Worse, what if she ran into someone bad? There was a man just… strolling beside her earlier. With Vespera’s beauty… sandy, panic engulfed him. He figured she must have headed in the opposite direction and sprinted after her, even though the back-and-forth journey had already cost him nearly 50 minutes.
Luke was running along the road when Rebecca’s car pulled up from behind. There were no streetlights, and she nearly hit him, slamming on the brakes just in time. She quickly got out of the car, yelling, “Are you trying to kill yourself? Running down the road in the middle of the night.” Her words caught in her throat as she recognized who it was and instantly fell into a complete silence.
Lake stared at her, who was standing with one hand on her hip, momentarily frozen in place. The next second, he recalled something and rushed to open the passenger-side door. Finding no one there, he checked the back seat. “Where’s Vespera?”
“How would I know? I’m just passing by.”
“Don’t give me that! Where is she?”
“Mr. Munoz, I really don’t know. I’m heading home now. It’s tomorrow,” Rebecca said with a yawn, looking absolutely exhausted. It’s 11:00 pm, and if I don’t leave now, I won’t be able to return until midnight. I have a court case to attend.
To her surprise, Luke climbed in as well, buckled his seatbelt with a stone-cold expression, and sat there as if it were the most natural thing in the world.
Rebecca was speechless. “Do you think this is your car? Am I your driver? Get out!”
Luke, however, didn’t budge. With his arms crossed, he sat there like an immovable ice sculpture. Reluctantly, she fastened her own seatbelt. “Fine. You…”
Rebecca sighed, knowing there was nothing she could do. She couldn’t physically fight him off, nor was yelling effective. “Don’t want to believe me, huh? Then stay in the car and see it. I’ve actually come to pick up your… wife.”
The words “ex-wife” made his eyes glint with cold anger. Rebecca immediately dropped the subject, feeling a bit intimidated, and focused on driving. After all, Vespera had already been picked up. If he wanted to…
