Listen to this chapter:

Grandfather Rhodes cleared his throat, looking seriously embarrassed as he actually looked at the photo properly this time.

Holy shit. The more he examined it, the more obvious it became. He’d been so pissed when he first saw the picture that he hadn’t bothered to really look at it. But now that Cassian had zoomed in, he could clearly see that while Anastasia looked like she was pressed against Garthan, her hands were actually up defensively in front of her chest. Even in an emergency, her gut reaction was to keep distance—she was obviously uncomfortable with the contact. With that context, whoever took this photo had some seriously shady motives.

Anastasia quietly let out a breath of relief, grateful the Rhodes family were actually rational people. If this had been the Hales, they would’ve lost their shit and never let her get a word in. She paused, confused. Why was she even comparing them? The Hales weren’t even in the same universe as the Rhodes family!

“Grandpa, now that we’ve sorted this out, I’m taking my wife home unless there’s something else,” Cassian said.

Grandfather Rhodes was way too embarrassed to push it further. He just waved them off.

Then Lancey suddenly piped up. “Hold on.”

Anastasia’s body went rigid. Oh God, what now?

“Ana, honey, why were you at the hospital? Are you feeling alright? Did you see a doctor? What did they say? If something’s wrong, you have to tell us—don’t bottle it up.”

Seeing the genuine worry on Lancey’s face, Anastasia felt her chest warm up. She’d been totally overthinking it—Lancey was just worried about her.

“Oh no, it wasn’t me—I’m totally fine. My grandmother took a fall and fractured her ankle. She’s staying in the hospital.”

“Elisabeth had such a bad accident and you didn’t tell us? We need to go see her!” Lancey said, then glanced at her watch. “Actually, let’s wait until tomorrow. It’s pretty late and older folks go to bed early—we don’t want to wake her up.”

“You really don’t have to. It’s not that serious—just a few days of rest and she’ll be good to go,” Anastasia said. She knew Elisabeth hated making a fuss and definitely wouldn’t want a bunch of people crowding around her hospital bed.

Lancey shook her head firmly. “Just because you and Cassian are married and we’re family now doesn’t mean we stop caring about each other. We care about Elisabeth the same way you care about us.”

When Lancey put it like that, Anastasia couldn’t really argue. “Okay, sounds good.”

When Anastasia and Cassian walked out of the study holding hands, they immediately spotted several people scrambling away from the door. Even though the eavesdroppers moved fast and they couldn’t make out faces, it was pretty obvious who they were.

Cassian squeezed Anastasia’s hand. “You feeling drained?”

His family might look all picture-perfect on the surface, but there was definitely some serious dysfunction underneath. Especially these days, with his uncles watching him get more powerful and take complete control of the company—they were starting to get ideas.

Anastasia smiled up at him. “Not even close. As long as I’m with you, I’m good.”

She totally meant it. Sure, their marriage had been impulsive and they hadn’t known each other that long, but she was starting to realize she’d fallen hard for this guy who was ice-cold on the outside but completely sweet and caring with her.

What she didn’t realize was that his sweet side was hers, and hers alone.
