A relationship between lovers could never last as long as friendship. It was precisely because she understood this that she had stayed by Lucas’ side all these years. Every time they worked together, whenever people mentioned Lucas, they would think of her name, and that was enough. Whenever someone thought of a woman who could stand beside Lucas, the first name that came to mind was hers.
Yvonne was very satisfied with that. In the future, she would make sure everyone understood that no woman but her could stand next to Lucas.
Soon, her ride arrived. When the crowd saw the bold license plate number, they all gasped. A string of auspicious digits, no matter the city, was something that drew attention. Yvonne had strong connections to get it. No one expected that even the car casually sent to pick up Yvonne would be so impressive.
Once again, everyone was struck by Yvonne’s influence. It seemed her power didn’t come only from personal ability, but also from the vast network and strong family background supporting her.
Yvonne noticed the gazes around her. Lifting her chin slightly, she put on her sunglasses and walked toward the car. When she got in and saw Lucas’ uncle behind the wheel, her brows furrowed. “Why is it you?”
She had assumed Lucas would be the one picking her up, especially since she’d already heard he was supposed to be heading to Bustin City. Though she didn’t know why he suddenly changed his schedule, their routes happened to be the same, and that alone had made her happy. But when she realized it was Edwin instead, the smile at her lips vanished, replaced with clear displeasure.
Seeing her reaction, Edwin didn’t say much. “What, are you that disappointed I came to get you?”
Yvonne gave a cold snort. “Of course; it would’ve been much better if my business partner came himself.”
She had never thought highly of Edwin. To her, he was nothing more than a loafer. Though she was the most favored one in the Carter family, the person in charge now was Lucas. In Yvonne’s eyes, only absolute strength was worthy of standing beside her. A man like Edwin could be a friend, but never a partner.
Yvonne had always been clear about her position, and she firmly believed that aside from Lucas, no one else was worthy of her. For that reason alone, she didn’t bother to say another word to him.
Seeing that, Edwin’s eyes flickered. He pressed a hand to his chest and said accusingly, “I even spoke up for you at the dinner table before.”
“Oh? Is that so?” Yvonne raised a brow with mild interest. She hadn’t expected Edwin to say anything in her favor. “I must’ve overlooked this side of you,” she said, giving him a deliberate once-over.
Edwin clutched his chest dramatically, his expression pained. “That’s because you’ve never really taken the time to notice me.”
Hearing that, Yvonne was briefly taken aback. Now that he mentioned it, he wasn’t entirely wrong. She had never truly looked at him carefully before. Besides, she’d heard about the recent Carter family dinner. Lucas had brought Aurora along. And from what she heard, Lucas’ parents seemed quite pleased with her.
At that thought, Yvonne’s hands clenched into fists. “What kind of woman is she?”
To win, she needed to know her opponent. She had to find out what kind of person Aurora was before figuring out if she could take Lucas back.
Edwin thought for a moment, then looked at Yvonne, suppressing the emotion in his eyes. “Ordinary. In my opinion, she’s nowhere near your level.”
Hearing that, Yvonne’s lips curved into a faint, satisfied smile. “At least you’re being honest this time.”
Edwin chuckled as well. “I am being honest. To me, no woman compares to you. You’re the only one truly worthy of my nephew.”
