Yvonne put on a modest front. “Don’t say things like that. He and I are just business partners. I came back only to see what kind of woman he chose to marry.”

Edwin smiled faintly, saying nothing more.

He knew Yvonne too well. For all her words, curiosity had clearly brought her back.

Otherwise, why would she abandon her thriving company overseas and suddenly return?

If not for Lucas, she probably wouldn’t have come back at all.

Her career abroad was far more promising, and her foundation was firmly established there.

For her to return now, it had to mean something significant.

Thinking of what had just happened, Edwin turned to her and said, “Aren’t you worried Lucas might come after you for what you just said?”

After all, Aurora was now officially the Carter family’s daughter-in-law, and her identity was public.

If anyone chose to stir trouble, Yvonne’s words just now could easily be seen as an insult to the Carters.

But Yvonne didn’t seem the least bit concerned.

If she dared to act, she was prepared to face the consequences.

“Don’t worry, I’ve thought it through,” Yvonne said confidently, looking at him. “Do you really think Lucas would turn against me over something so trivial?

“We’ve been partners for years. I still have that much faith in him.”

Hearing that, Edwin recalled how Lucas had openly defended Aurora at the event earlier.

Even though he wanted to believe Yvonne was right, an uneasy feeling stirred in his chest for reasons he couldn’t explain.

Seeing how confident Yvonne looked, Edwin didn’t have the heart to dampen her spirits.

If Lucas truly turned against Yvonne one day, he was determined to protect her no matter what.

“I think you’re right,” Edwin said, following her lead.

“Of course I am,” Yvonne lifted her chin proudly. “Even though his parents like her, I’ve known them for years. They once even said they wanted to take me in as their goddaughter.

“So, compared to Aurora, I haven’t lost to her at all. We just haven’t appeared in front of them at the same time.”

Yvonne was full of confidence. If they ever met face to face, she believed both Lucas and his parents would choose her without hesitation.

To be honest, Aurora had only managed to take the upper hand because she herself hadn’t fought back.

But if she put in even a little effort, if she truly wanted to, those people could easily return to her side in no time.

Edwin let out a quiet sigh of relief, choosing not to say anything that might spoil her mood.

“Let’s hope so,” he said simply.

He started the car. “Come on, I’ll take you to get something to eat first.”

“After that, drop me off at the hotel. I need to rest.”

Yvonne hadn’t come back just for leisure. She had her own goals.

Maybe, she thought darkly, Aurora must have used some kind of trick to keep Lucas by her side.
