Chapter 250
โAlright, I got it.โ Aurora nodded, brushing it off like the matter had been settled.
Her indifferent tone made something twist in Lucasโ chest. He felt wrongedโhurt, evenโbut what could he say? He couldnโt bring himself to lash out at her. All he could do was mutter a quiet, โGot it,โ and turn to leave the room.
Aurora let the towel fall from her hand as she stood there, deflated like a balloon with all the air let out. She had put on a strong front, but really, it was all for show. Her strength was nothing but a thin layer barely holding her together.
Back in his room, Lucas didnโt feel much better. After everything theyโd been through, no matter what he did or said, he still couldnโt get through to her. He tossed his phone onto the bed and pressed a hand to his forehead, feeling the weight of it all. Was their relationship really going to fall apart because of someone like Wendy? The thought alone left a bitter taste in his mouth.
Still, the next morning, when he went to find Aurora to talk things out, he discovered the guest room was empty. That only made his frustration worse.
When they got home that evening, Wendy quickly noticed something was off between them. There was something subtle in the airโtense, quiet, cold. But she couldnโt quite put her finger on it. What really stood out was how neither of them said a word to each other the entire time. That wasnโt right at all. Before, Lucas would always be the one to speak first, maybe asking Aurora what she wanted for breakfast, or casually making conversation. But now, he was preoccupied with his own tasks, and Aurora went about her meals like nothing was out of the ordinary, as if Lucas and Wendy were nothing more than two strangers she happened to share a house with.
Wendy couldnโt help the flicker of excitement rising in her chest. Had they fought? She couldnโt hold it in any longer and finally asked, โLukey, why arenโt you talking to Aurora? Whatโs going on between you two?โ
Her question hung in the air. Lucas and Aurora glanced at each other for a brief second, then, just as quickly, looked away. Lucasโ voice was cold. โItโs nothing. Just eat your dinner.โ Aurora, however, couldnโt help but throw a jab. โYeah, we fought. Feel free to pack your bags. Looks like your chance to move up has finally come.โ
With that, she gave a lazy toss of her hair and turned on her heel, walking straight out the door and heading for the office. She left Lucas and Wendy staring at each other in awkward silence. Wendyโs eyes filled with tears instantly, shimmering as she looked pitifully at Lucas. โLukey, did sheโฆ did she misunderstand me?โ
Lucasโ expression was as dark as storm clouds. And hearing Wendyโs question only made his irritation spike. He didnโt say a wordโjust got up and walked out, clearly unwilling to be alone in the same room with her. The door slammed shut behind him with a sharp bang, snapping Wendy out of her daze.
Soโฆ Aurora had figured her out all along. As for Lucas, she still couldnโt tell what side he was really on. One moment he seemed to care, the next he was ice-cold. His attitude was impossible to read, leaving her in a constant state of unease.
She took a deep breath and stared at the untouched food on the table. A slow smile spread across her face. โNo matter. Iโve got time. I can take my time with you, Lukey.โ Wendy calmly picked up her fork and began eating as if nothing had happened.
Meanwhile, Aurora stepped outside, feeling lighter than she had in days.
