Listen to this chapter:

โ€œNo problem, Iโ€™ll be there on the dot.โ€

After hanging up, Megan tossed off her blanket and sat up straight in bed. She threw on something casual and started getting ready for a proper night out. Since she was finally going out, she could indulge a little and go on a shopping spree.

Meanwhile, once Aurora had left, Lucas returned to his office. He had barely sat down before his expression darkened. โ€œWhat the hell is everyone doing in this company? Aurora showed up at Vanguard and not a single person thought to notify me?โ€

Desmond wiped the sweat from his forehead, nerves jangling. โ€œSir, do you want me to look into how that happened?โ€

Lucas gave a curt nod. โ€œDig into it thoroughly. Donโ€™t leave out a single detail.โ€

โ€œYes, sir. Iโ€™ll take care of it right away.โ€

With a wave of his hand, Lucas dismissed him, letting Desmond get to work. He exhaled slowly. Good thing Desmond had been there earlier. Otherwise, that situation wouldโ€™ve been a nightmare to explain.

The fact that Aurora had managed to get up here unnoticed meant something was definitely off. She mustโ€™ve sensed something wasnโ€™t right, or she wouldnโ€™t have shown up like that. That thought unsettled Lucas. If things kept going like this, it was only a matter of time before she uncovered the truth. He couldnโ€™t keep dodging forever. Maybe it was time to consider telling her the truth?

Lucas rubbed his temples, feeling a growing unease. If this dragged on any longer, he was going to lose his mind. Playing dumb in front of Aurora couldnโ€™t go on much longer.

The investigation results came back quicklyโ€“Aurora hadnโ€™t come in through the main entrance. She had used one of the side doors instead. Along the way, sheโ€™d even made a point of avoiding the security cameras.

Lucas nearly laughed when he heard that. Of course, the woman he had his eye on wouldnโ€™t be so easily predictable.

Chapter 27 She was sharp, methodical, and bold enough to follow through. That made him even more curiousโ€“just how many layers did Aurora still have hidden from him?

โ€œAurora, Iโ€™m all set. Where are you?โ€

Megan was perched on a barstool, decked out in full punk fashionโ€“dark, smoky eyeshadow, a dangerously short skirt, and an attitude that screamed confidence and chaos. She looked wild, carefree, completely at ease. People around the bar kept sneaking glances at her, clearly trying to figure out if she was single. But Megan didnโ€™t flinch under the attention. Cool as ever, she lit a slim ladiesโ€˜ cigarette, lazily crossed one leg over the other, and sent Aurora a message.

โ€œGirl, where are you? This place is crawling with creeps, all eyeing me like Iโ€™m dessert. If you donโ€™t get here soon, Iโ€™m gonna get eaten alive.โ€

Aurora rolled her eyes when she saw the message. With Megan, it was never her that needed protectionโ€“it was everyone else who needed to be careful around her. Never mind the fact that her drinking tolerance was off the chartsโ€“her self-defense skills were even better. She rarely had to use them, but they were there. The Quinn family had always believed girls should be able to take care of themselves. So, theyโ€™d pushed Megan hard growing up, and it had paid off. Even without anyone around, she could hold her own just fine.

Aurora fired off a quick reply: โ€œRelax. Iโ€™m almost there. Got stuck in traffic.โ€

That finally shut Megan up, sparing Aurora a few more minutes of peace. Just as Megan was about to snap at some of the stares around her, Aurora arrived. She walked straight up, placing a hand on Meganโ€™s shoulder. โ€œAlright, chill. Iโ€™m here now. And tonight, weโ€™re not leaving until weโ€™re drunk out of our minds.โ€
