Chapter 270
Desmond caught on quickly and straightened up at once.
Lucas, looking aggrieved, said, โOf course I donโt mean anything by it. Iโm just here for work.โ
Aurora raised an eyebrow. โWhatโs that supposed to mean? Are you saying Iโve misunderstood you?โ
Lucas nodded earnestly. โYes, youโve misunderstood me.โ
Faced with Lucas acting so shamelessly, Aurora found herself helpless.
โThen why do you keep showing up at this company?โ she couldnโt help but ask.
The question had been weighing on her for too long. Left unanswered, it would only build up until it exploded like a volcano.
Lucas tilted his head and glanced at Desmond beside him, a silent warning in his eyes. โIโve actually been coordinating with one of the people in charge here. This is the project lead at Vanguard, the person Iโve mainly been working with.โ
Desmond instantly picked up on his bossโs cue and played along smoothly. โThatโs right, miss. Mr. Carter is one of my primary clients. There have been a few unresolved issues, which is why heโs been coming to the company frequently.
โThis project has a tight deadline, so weโve all been working overtime to meet it. Some of us have even been staying at the office. We havenโt had a moment to rest. I hope you can understand.โ
Aurora didnโt know what to say to that.
Meanwhile, Lucas gave Desmond a discreet thumbs-up behind her back. He hadnโt expected Desmond to be this reliable when it counted. Even he couldnโt find any flaws in that explanation.
Aurora certainly couldnโt either, especially with how sincere they both looked. There was nothing she could pick apart.
She gave in. โFine. Iโll let you get back to work, then. I wonโt bother you.โ
She turned and walked toward the conference room.
Since she was already here, she couldnโt just leave empty-handed. It made more sense to speak with her project lead and discuss a few things. Otherwise, wouldnโt the whole trip be a waste?
As for Lucas, he might have gotten away with brushing her off once or twice, but if it kept happening, it was only a matter of time before things started to fall apart.
After bumping into him at the company so many times, it was hard not to be suspicious. Aurora felt deeply unsettled.
Lucas, what exactly are you hiding? Weโre marriedโyou must be honest with me. But youโd better not be hiding something unforgivable here. Because even if youโre my husband, I wonโt let it slide.
She took a deep breath, that stifling feeling in her chest still refusing to ease. It was like something was stuckโneither rising nor falling.
In the end, she couldnโt take it anymore. She needed to unwind, or that frustration was going to consume her.
Aurora picked up her phone and called Megan, asking her to go out for drinks that night.
The moment Megan heard the words โgo out for drinks,โ her eyes practically lit up.
โOh my god, Aurora, youโre finally free! You have no ideaโIโve been living like a nun lately. Just work, sleep, repeat. Zero fun.
โThis is a miracle! I canโt believe you actually called me first. I thought Iโd have to wait till the next lifetime to hear from you again.โ
Aurora rolled her eyes, stunning as ever. โYouโre being ridiculous. Cut the crap. Same place tonight.โ
