Chapter 356
โShe really said that?โ
Kenneth was fuming as he listened to Wendyโs words. He couldnโt believe it.
After all the years of friendship between him and Lucas, Aurora still dared to treat his sister like she meant nothing. If things continued this way, was that bond he had with Lucas going to be completely worn down?
Kenneth couldnโt afford to lose someone like Lucas as an ally. Just the thought of it made him uneasy.
He and Wendy were thinking the same thingโAurora had come into the picture much later. There was no way Lucas would disregard years of brotherhood for a woman, especially not to the point of choosing her over his oldest friend.
After all, women came and wentโfriends were for life. Kenneth believed that, and he was sure Lucas understood that too.
Trying to shake the discomfort from his chest, Kenneth pushed the question. โSo, what did Lucas say?โ
Wendy hesitated, unsure how to respond. The truth was, she hadnโt exactly been treated kindly either.
Kenneth narrowed his eyes as she dodged the question. He didnโt like what her silence implied.
โWhy arenโt you answering me? Donโt tell meโฆ Lucas took Auroraโs side?โ
Wendy still avoided giving a straight answer. Instead, she said flatly, โIf you have time, you should come back and see for yourself. Itโs not something I can explain in just a few words.โ
Kenneth frowned deeply. Something felt off about all this.
โIโm swamped right now. Itโs not easy for me to leave.โ
โThen when will it be?โ Wendy pressed. She was done waiting.
Maybe she didnโt mean as much to Lucas as her brother did, but she couldnโt stand watching Aurora strut around like she owned the place any longer.
Hearing her insistence, Kenneth sighed and began thinking things through.
It was true that he couldnโt just drop everything and fly home. His responsibilities abroad were heavy, and their aging parents relied on him. The company was practically resting on his shoulders.
Wendy was far too impulsiveโhe couldnโt possibly leave things in her hands. If he were to return, heโd need to get everything in order first.
โDonโt worry. When I have time, Iโll give you a heads-up before I come back. But for now, donโt go head-to-head with Aurora. Keep a low profile and know your place.โ
Wendyโs heart sank. She never expected her own brother to speak to her like that, telling her to keep her head down and โknow her placeโ?
The words stung more than she wanted to admit. Still, she didnโt have much of a choice. As long as she could stay in the house and remain close to Lucas, she still had a shot at winning him over.
She didnโt know when, or even if, that opportunity would come, but staying gave her hope.
โAlright, I get it. Just make sure you call me first if you decide to come back.โ
Kenneth gave a brief โMmโ before hanging up without another word.
Wendy stared at her now-black screen, stunned into silence.
With even her brother taking that stance, she knew she had no room to act out. For the next few days, she needed to behave herself.
After all, who knew what Aurora might do if she stepped out of line again? She had cried so hard earlier, practically begged to be allowed to stay.
And she wasnโt about to risk being thrown out again.
