Chapter 439
She tiptoed to the doorway of Aurora and Lucasโ bedroom. The sound of running water drifted out, and a smile slowly stretched across her face. Perfect.
That meant Aurora was in the shower, which also meant Lucas was in the kitchen alone. At that thought, Wendy couldnโt hold back her grin. Sure enough, when she stepped into the kitchen, her guess was spot on. Lucas stood there by himself, tidying up. Wendy clenched her fists.
That wretched woman, Aurora. After eating and drinking her fill, she had Lucas working like a servant while she lounged in the bathroom, doing absolutely nothing. The injustice of it all made Wendy bristle. If she were the one with Lucas, sheโd never let him lift a finger, let alone do chores. Sheโd never let him be treated this way. Those hands of his were meant for signing multi-million-dollar deals, not scrubbing plates. With a man like Lucas, she wouldnโt need to lift a single finger for the rest of her life; sheโd be wrapped in luxury.
Her gaze shifted to his face, then his lean, sculpted frame. Yes, this was exactly the kind of man worthy of her. Desire flickered in Wendyโs eyes, growing so bold it nearly etched itself across her face.
Lucas, still focused on cleaning, suddenly paused. He had a nagging sense that someone was watching him. When he spun around, his eyes landed on Wendy, and her expression hadnโt shifted in time. That hungry, longing stare was right there, unashamed and unmistakable. Anyone with eyes could see it. Lucasโ brows furrowed as he instinctively stepped back.
โWhat are you doing here?โ Heโd just been cleaning up, minding his own business. And now, out of nowhere, Wendy was standing there, practically devouring him with her eyes.
It sent a chill down his spine. But Lucas wasnโt just anyone. He recovered quickly.
Wendyโs expression quickly shifted back to normal, as if that intense gaze from moments ago had never existed. โLukey, I just came to check if the food was alright. Did everything suit your taste?โ
โIt was fine.โ Lucas gave a short reply, but her question still made him pause. โWhy did you suddenly decide to cook for us?โ He couldnโt bring himself to assume the worst of Wendyโnot outright. After all, he had watched her grow up. Sheโd been like a younger sister to him. But they hadnโt seen each other in a while now, and the Wendy standing in front of him felt completely different from the girl he remembered. It was more than just timeโit was something in her presence and demeanor. She didnโt feel the same. With that thought, Lucas glanced at her, a trace of wariness in his eyes.
Seeing his guarded expression, Wendyโs smile faltered ever so slightly, turning a little bitter. There was a time when they could talk about anything. When had things changed so drastically between them? She didnโt have to think too hard. It was all because of Aurora. If Aurora had never shown up, Lucas wouldโve only ever belonged to her. No one else wouldโve had the chance to come between them. Wendy drew in a deep breath and forced a soft, awkward smile. โItโs justโฆ Iโve been staying here for quite a while now. Iโm starting to feel a little embarrassed.โ
โGood. At least youโre aware.โ Lucasโ words cut clean through her sentence, leaving her no room to respond. The smile on Wendyโs face froze.
