Chapter 514
โI wonโt let anyone take it from you.โ
With that, Lucas stepped out and made a call to Desmond.
Desmond was still at the company, neck-deep in work. He already felt drained, and when he saw Lucasโ name pop up on his phone, he nearly blacked out. Seriously? Was this never going to end?
He took a deep breath, trying to collect himself, then finally answered.
โMr. Carter, whatโs going on? What do you need?โ
Lucas spoke in a low voice. โI wonโt be able to return for now. Keep a close eye on the company for me. Also, find someone to monitor Walton Corporation. We canโt let anyone make a move while Auroraโs down.โ
With that, he hung up, leaving Desmond standing there in stunned silence, winded like heโd just been punched in the gut. He stared at the black screen, speechless. What the hell was this? Were these two taking turns tormenting him? He was already juggling everything on his own, and now they wanted to dump even more work on him. Seriously, were this husband and wife tag-teaming just to ruin his life?
Desmond was filled with resentment, but he had no choice. The truth was, Lucas paid him very well. If he left this job, who knew where heโd find another one like it? Might as well stick it out.
Just as he was about to find someone to keep tabs on Walton Corporation, a new message from Lucas popped up:
โI will increase your salary by tenfold this month.โ
The moment Desmond saw โtenfold,โ his eyes lit up. Suddenly, his back didnโt ache anymore, his headache vanished, and the world looked brighter than ever. The future was promisingโhe was still young, he could keep going.
Now, no matter what task he took on, one thing echoed in Desmondโs mind: โTenfold.โ
And just like that, energy surged through him. Desmond replied to Lucas with a cheerful message:
โMr. Carter, donโt worry. You just focus on staying by Mrs. Carterโs side. Iโve got both the company and Walton Corporation covered. If anything comes up, Iโll inform you right away. Moneyโs not the pointโitโs all about loyalty.โ
Lucas glanced at the message but didnโt reply. Heโd long understood that money could move mountains. Spending a bit to get things done was worth it. To him, money was nothing more than a string of cold numbers. Rather than letting it sit idle, heโd rather put it to good use.
He stood up and looked at Aurora, still lying unconscious. His mind replayed what the butler and Ian had told him earlier. The current situation couldnโt go on. They couldnโt afford to let Aurora remain asleep like this. No one knew if her condition was dangerous. More importantly, he didnโt trust a word the hospitalโs doctor had said. Some things had to be handled by his own peopleโpeople he could trust.
With that thought, Lucas rose to his feet and stepped out to make a call, leaving Aurora alone in the room.
Meanwhile, Gary had been filled with anxiety these past couple of days. It was already the second day, and by his calculation, Aurora would be waking up soon. Once the drug wore off, there wouldnโt be much wrong with her physically, which meant everything heโd done would be exposed. After all, Tessa had made it clear that Aurora wasnโt supposed to wake up at all.
