Chapter 523

She knew now that if the Shaws family fell, no one would even remember her name. That realization hit her hard. Wendy had finally come to understand. No matter how obsessed she was with Lucas, the family mattered more. The Shaws couldn’t be destroyed because of her, especially not by the very man she was hopelessly chasing. If that happened, she didn’t think she could ever forgive herself.

After hearing everything, Kenneth was quiet for a long while, unsure of what to say. “So… Aurora’s still in the hospital, unconscious?”

His voice was low, almost stunned. Wendy nodded. “Yeah, she hasn’t woken up at all. And Lukey hasn’t even come home these past few days. He’s been at the hospital the whole time. So now it’s just me at the house. I don’t know what to do anymore.”

Kenneth stared at his sister, overwhelmed with frustration. He hadn’t seen Aurora in person, but judging by how fiercely Lucas was guarding her, she was probably stunning, like some kind of goddess. If Lucas hadn’t come back in two days, then she clearly hadn’t recovered yet. Kenneth racked his brain, unsure what to do next. And Wendy, so deflated now, wasn’t saying a word too loud.

“Brother… I mean, when I did those things before, Aurora didn’t even seem that angry. Actually, now that I think about it… she’s kind of a nice person.” Kenneth’s eyes widened. “That’s not what you said over the phone. You called her a cheap woman. You said if she weren’t so easy, you would’ve already gotten Luc-” “Ugh! Let me go! I never said that!” Wendy shrieked, trying to shut him up. Her mouth clamped shut, refusing to confess.

She knew full well that if she admitted to saying anything like that, her brother would absolutely refuse to help her again. She’d already blurted out more than she should have–there was no way she was going to let everything unravel now. “Brother, please… help me.” Wendy looked at Kenneth with pleading eyes. She was truly desperate now. “I won’t stay in this house anymore, I swear. I really do want to protect the Shaws family.” “You wanted to keep staying here?” Kenneth scoffed. “That’s obviously not happening.”

Wendy quickly backpedaled, “Okay, okay! I take it back. That was wrong of me to say.” Only then did Kenneth’s expression ease slightly. “There’s only one way forward now.” “What is it?” Kenneth looked serious. “You need to apologize to Aurora. And we need to bring in doctors, real ones, to find out what’s actually going on with her. And for that, we’ll have to pull strings internationally.”

“Why do I have to apologize again?” Wendy grumbled. Kenneth frowned. “Again? What do you mean ‘again’? You’ve apologized before?” Wendy pouted. “Not really… Lukey just took me to see her at the hospital. She wasn’t awake. You have no idea–I even saw him fight a man over her. Right there in the hospital!” That caught Kenneth completely off guard. “Wait, are you serious?” “Of course! Why would I lie about something like that?” Wendy said eagerly, her face full of gossip. “I was shocked too!”

Kenneth sighed deeply. “Alright, then. But regardless, the most important thing now is that you apologize to Aurora, whether she hears it or not. You need to make a show of it for Lucas’ sake.”
