Chapter 529

Wendy took a deep breath and forced herself to calm down. After all, everything they were doing was for the sake of the Shaw family and their company.

With just a flick of Lucas’ finger, it wouldn’t matter if they were overseas–there was no escaping him. Wendy had known that since she was young, back when she first developed a crush on him. So, in some ways, she understood Lucas’ power and methods better than most.

Standing in the parking garage, she worked to steady her emotions. Ever since the last time, when Lucas had told her to get lost, they hadn’t seen each other.

This time, she felt that same nervous flutter a girl might have before seeing her first love again. And deep down, she wondered–would his attitude toward her be any different now? She couldn’t help but feel a mix of anticipation and tension. By the time she followed Kenneth to the hospital room, she was so on edge she didn’t even realize they’d arrived.

Kenneth caught sight of Lucas sitting at the bedside, attentively caring for the woman lying there, and felt a jolt in his chest. So there really was a woman out there who could change Lucas. He’d never believed such a person existed until now. He raised an eyebrow and stepped forward with the things in hand. Before he could speak, Lucas’ low voice cut through the silence.

“What are you doing here?”

Lucas barely glanced at them, clearly annoyed by the interruption. It wasn’t often he had a quiet moment alone with Aurora, and now it had been ruined.

“Uh, Lucas, I’m just here to take Wendy with me,” Kenneth said quickly.

The moment Kenneth spoke, Wendy closed her eyes, feeling completely crushed inside. She had thought, at the very least, her brother would ease into it, maybe give her a moment to breathe. But no–he jumped straight to the point, leaving her no time to prepare. Wendy glanced nervously at Lucas, wondering if he might stop her, maybe ask her to stay. But in the very next second, her expression froze. She couldn’t believe what she heard.

“What does it have to do with me? Just take her and go.”

Her mouth fell slightly open. To say it didn’t hurt would be a lie. She could hardly believe that such a cold sentence came from Lucas’ lips. Kenneth gave her a look that said, “See? It’s not that I didn’t try. I really did ask.” But now, Wendy looked like a shell of herself, completely out of it, devastated.

Chapter 530

Lucas, on the other hand, didn’t even seem to notice. “If that’s all you came here to say, then you can leave now.”

“Wait!” Kenneth blurted out, frustrated. “Lucas, when did you get so cold? Aren’t we still best friends?”

Lucas hesitated at that. He did value Kenneth as a brother. But with Wendy constantly in the picture, he was starting to think maybe the friendship wasn’t worth the cost. Then again, maybe it had always been a one-sided assumption.

“What are you trying to say?”

Lucas exhaled and finally gave a clearer answer. “Of course we’re friends. But your sister? She’s just not it.”
