The man’s deep, sexy voice echoed on the other end of the phone, drifting through the receiver and into Grace’s ears.

Lucas had been feeling uneasy on the way. What if, as her attending doctor had said, Aurora would never wake up, and her condition might get worse from the transfer? What would they do then? Lucas didn’t mind, as he would take care of Aurora. But she had always been so proud and radiant–how could she accept this fate? A life like this would be worse than death for her. Lucas clenched his fists. After spending time with her, he knew exactly what was on her mind. She was proud, but at the same time, she certainly wouldn’t be able to accept her current existence.

Grace, hearing Lucas’ words, felt her heart leap into her throat, her voice trembling as she spoke. “How dare you? I’m telling you, if anything happens to my daughter, I’ll make sure you regret it the moment I find out! I’ll make sure you pay, even if it costs me my life!”

Lucas pursed his lips, his expression unreadable. “Mom, the fact that I’m still calling you ‘Mom’ means I still respect you. Don’t worry, Aurora is your daughter, yes, but she’s also the woman I love the most. I will never stand by and let anything happen to her.” His voice became more serious. “Did Tessa tell you about Aurora’s condition?” By the time Lucas said the last part, his tone had shifted to certainty, and there was no trace of surprise left.

If Tessa hadn’t reported it, how would Grace have known about this situation? It was ridiculous. But now, Grace knew everything, and even came to blame him. Lucas didn’t even have to think twice; he already knew who had told Grace all of this.

Grace took a deep breath. “Lucas, I’m not asking anything of you anymore. You don’t have to worry, I won’t blame you for anything. I just want to ask you one thing–how is my daughter now? Didn’t the doctor say she mustn’t be moved? Have you even considered the consequences of this, or did you treat it like a game?” Grace didn’t take Lucas’ words seriously about putting Aurora first. To her, men’s words were the least reliable. No matter how much time had passed, the things men said were just to be heard, not believed. If she took them seriously, then she would be a fool.

I’m asking about my daughter’s condition, but you keep dodging the question. What’s going on with Aurora now? The doctor said she shouldn’t be moved, yet here you are, taking her abroad?” Grace recalled the call she had just made, only to find it unanswered.
