Listen to this chapter:

People like them, at the bottom of the ladder, had no choice but to obey. But seeing how resolute the doctors and nurses were, despair quickly set in. Was there really no room to turn things around? How had it come to this? They were just bystanders at the start. They were just there for the gossip. It wasnโ€™t like theyโ€™d actually done anything. Wasnโ€™t this punishment a little too harsh?

No one paid them any mind. No one had the time or patience to deal with their whining. Everyone had more important things to do. And thanks to Lucas losing his temper, a whole chain of consequences had been set in motion. Anyone with half a brain could see how much he treasured Aurora. And these idiots still had to go provoke him. What did they expect? If they were so eager to make trouble, why should Lucas bother being polite? There were too many thoughtless fools in the world. When he came across them, he dealt with them swiftlyโ€“better than letting them go on and cause real harm elsewhere.

Beside him, the hospital director stood humbly, his smile nervous.

โ€œMr. Carter, please donโ€™t let those people ruin your mood. You have my word, theyโ€™ll be properly dealt with.โ€

Lucas barely reacted. To him, they were nothing more than clowns. What happened to them next didnโ€™t matter. He gave a soft grunt in reply, then said, โ€œFocus on finding out whatโ€™s wrong with my wife.โ€

With that, he turned and stepped into the room.

โ€œYes, sir. Iโ€™ll make sure Jason speeds things up.โ€ And the director, still trailing behind, bowed and nodded with such deference he didnโ€™t dare take a single step away.

The other senior doctors, though shocked by the scene, knew better than to ask questions. Now was not the time to speak out of turnโ€“doing so would only get them in trouble. That was just the way the world worked. After so many years under the director, they knew his temperament well enough. He was the kind of man used to being on a pedestalโ€“always the one others sucked up to, never the one doing the sucking up. When had they ever seen him practically tripping over himself to please someone? It was unheard of. And that made them all the more wary. Every glance toward the room where Aurora lay was filled with respect and caution. They couldnโ€™t afford even a momentโ€™s delay.

โ€œMr. Winter, should we assist Dr. Jason with the research? Maybe I'll help speed things up,โ€

The director nodded quickly. โ€œYes, yes, go with him. Put everything else aside for now. Finding out whatโ€™s wrong with Miss Walton takes priority.โ€

The team of doctors all nodded in unison.

Off to the side, Leonard stood frozen in disbelief. Wasnโ€™t Lucas supposed to be just some average guy? What the hell was going on? But Megan looked completely unfazed, as if sheโ€™d known all along. Leonard couldnโ€™t help itโ€“his curiosity was eating at him.

โ€œMiss Quinn, whatโ€™s going on with your cousin?โ€ He had to ask. After all, heโ€™d heard all kinds of rumors beforeโ€“Lucas, the moody pretty boy, nothing special besides his face. That was why Leonard always believed he still had a chance. Surely Aurora was only with him for his looks. He just had to wait.
