But now, Leonard finally realized the gap between him and Lucas was far wider than he'd thought.

Faced with Leonard’s question, Megan didn’t really know how to respond. She gave a vague cough, trying to brush it off.

“Well… I’m not sure how to explain it exactly.” She hesitated, then added, “Just remember this–my cousin isn’t the most patient guy. Don’t push his buttons.”

She kept the part about “or you will regret it” to herself. Those people from earlier were a perfect example. After being kicked out, they probably wouldn’t be allowed back in the hospital at all. That much, Megan knew without a doubt.

Meanwhile, Tessa and Julian were watching from the shadows, having witnessed everything, including the way the hospital director treated Lucas with such visible deference. Tessa’s heart tightened. Her brother-in-law was clearly not an ordinary man. The thought made her slowly clench her fists.

That bitch Aurora really played her cards well. She never once mentioned anything about this. Who would’ve thought her husband turned out to be someone so powerful?

Even Julian looked rattled after seeing what just happened. “Your sister’s husband… who exactly is he?” he asked nervously.

Tessa rolled her eyes. This man was completely useless. All he did was panic and ask questions. What else was he good for? All these years, and at the first sign of trouble he still ran crying to his mom? Tessa never got along with his mother, who was spineless and always nitpicking, and never would. It didn’t matter how much time had passed; she still couldn’t stand the woman. Something about the way she spoke always rubbed her the wrong way. There was no saving that kind of in-law relationship, and Tessa didn’t even need to think twice about it. She’d seen enough cautionary tales–on TV and social media. Even if she hadn’t lived through it, she’d watched enough to know how ugly it could get. Given Julian’s personality, she could already picture what kind of nightmare marriage would be. That was why she kept stalling. She needed to find someone better.

Wasting time on him wasn’t part of her plan.

When Julian asked her that question, she didn’t know how to answer. She rubbed her nose awkwardly and said, “I’m not sure. I mean, you know how things were between me and Aurora. She’d never tell me anything personal, let alone something like this.”

Julian thought about it and had to agree that it made sense. Asking Tessa really was a waste of time. It was not like she could offer any useful insight anyway.

Still, they hadn’t forgotten why they were here in the first place. Julian gave Tessa a look and nodded toward the patient room, lowering his voice. “So, how do we get inside for the injection?”

That was exactly what Tessa had been worrying about. With the way Lucas was guarding that room around the clock, there was no way they were getting in.
