“Of course I am!”

Lucas huffed in frustration. “I’m nothing like Joseph Hunt. I don’t want that kind of feeling from you.”

He wasn’t clueless. He had definitely noticed the change in Aurora’s feelings for him before she woke up.

The way she looked at him had changed.

Her eyes sparkled every time they landed on him, as if he was her entire world.

Lucas had never seen that kind of look on her face before.

That was why he was so caught off guard this time.

And after everything Aurora had just said, it was hard not to wonder if she was only with him out of gratitude.

Joseph was the perfect example of how things could go wrong when feelings were born from obligation.

That so-called gratitude had ended with him being left behind.

Lucas was still spiraling in his own thoughts when, all of a sudden, a pair of hands cupped his face and began to squish his cheeks.

“Enough already. What I feel for you is nothing like what I feel for Joseph.”

Lucas’ eyes lit up. “Do you really mean that?”

Seeing that he still didn’t quite believe her, Aurora grew a little annoyed. “Of course I mean it. Why wouldn’t you believe me?”

“Because you never looked at me that way before.”

Ever since she woke up, Lucas had stopped holding back.

He just said whatever he felt.

Aurora was left covering her face in embarrassment, her cheeks burning.

She had been giving herself mental pep talks before finally whispering, “That’s because I didn’t want to let all my feelings show before.

“You had a girl you secretly loved before, and I couldn’t stop obsessing over it.”

At that, Lucas’ eyes widened as he stared at her in disbelief.

How could she think that about him?

Lucas was just about to explain when Aurora raised her index finger and gently pressed it against his lips.

“I know what you’re trying to say.

“Don’t worry, I won’t think like that anymore. I understand what’s been going on in your heart, and that’s why I finally let myself open up.”

Hearing her say that eased Lucas a little.

But he still couldn’t help adding, “I never had someone like that. Before you, I’d never dated anyone.

“Rora, if anything ever bothers you again, just tell me directly. Don’t keep it bottled up.”

Aurora nodded. “I won’t, I promise.”

This time, the two of them had finally laid everything bare.

Lucas made sure to reaffirm, “There really is no one else. It’s been you from the very beginning.”

Aurora had already heard that line countless times.

She was starting to feel like her ears were growing calluses.

“Alright, alright, let’s eat. I’m actually getting hungry.”

She rubbed her stomach.

After lying in bed for nearly a month, surviving on IV nutrition, her belly was full of nothing but fluids.

All she wanted now was a proper meal.

But Lucas stopped her.

“What is it now? You’re not even letting me eat?”

Aurora gave him a disgruntled look.

He shook his head. “No, it’s just… you just woke up. We should let the doctor take a look first, just to be safe.”

Without hearing the doctor’s assessment, Lucas didn’t dare to act on anything.

It had been nearly a month–far too long for him.

He truly didn’t want to go through that again.

That kind of life had been nothing but bleak.
