Tessa could only mumble, “Then… what exactly do you want from us?”
Hector straightened up, the playful tone from earlier completely gone. His expression returned to its usual sternness, his voice cold and sharp.
“It’s not about what I want–it’s about how you’re going to make this right. You’re from Ravenshore. We don’t have jurisdiction over you here in Millford, so you’ll be sent back. Also, the phone has conclusive evidence. The account history is tied to you–don’t think you can run.”
“Based on what?” Tessa couldn’t hold back anymore.
“Where's your chief? I want to see him.” How could they pin this on her so easily? Besides, she remembered there wasn’t any activity on that account. Could they have made a mistake? Or worse, were they trying to pressure her into confessing something she didn’t do?
“You think you can just demand to see the chief?” Zack couldn’t help chiming in from the side. He thought Tessa was being ridiculous. He’d once thought she had nerve, but now it seemed she was just bluffing her way through.
Tessa, however, fixed her eyes on him, unwavering. “I said I want to see your chief.”
Hector glanced at her, then at Zack—who actually looked shaken by her tone—and couldn’t help but curse silently. Useless. Couldn’t even hold your ground against a woman like this? He stepped forward, shielding Zack behind him.
“Miss Tessa, what you’re asking for is against protocol. And our chief doesn’t have time to entertain anyone at will. You don’t get to call the shots.”
Tessa looked at this impossible man and felt a wave of frustration. Still, she knew that if she wanted to reach the chief, Hector was the only way in. But God, this man was stubborn beyond belief.
“Sergeant, you know who I am.” Tessa lifted her chin slightly. “So, when I make a request, I expect some effort to accommodate it. Otherwise, if I tell my family…. Do you really think your newly earned rank will stay intact?”
Hector actually laughed. “Miss Tessa, let’s not kid ourselves. I earned this position step by step. As for you–if you really want to reach your family, maybe you should focus on getting back to your country first. Your fiancé reached out to his family. And what happened?”
There was no denying it–Hector knew exactly where to hit. Every word landed like a blade. Tessa took two steps back, her expression shifting to genuine shock. She hadn’t expected him to be this unyielding or sharp-tongued.
She opened her mouth to respond, but Hector clearly wasn’t interested in hearing more. He was dead set on putting both of them behind bars. Since Lucas had placed trust in him, he wasn’t going to let that down. He still had that much loyalty.
But Tessa didn’t know any of this. She just looked at Hector’s resolute expression and realized there was no room for negotiation. No point in trying to talk her way out of it. She closed her eyes for a brief moment, then gave up the fight.
Fine. Once she was back in Ravenshore, she’d have far more options. There’d be no need to keep worrying like this.
