Chapter 101

Lena found herself trapped, the man's dagger a hair's breadth from her throat. Just then, an invisible beam of cold light shot from Cameron's position, striking the man's armpit with precision.

The man's expression shifted abruptly. His arm stiffened, as if petrified, freezing mid-air. Seizing the opportunity, Lena, assuming the man hadn't fully recovered from her previous blow, delivered a vicious sidekick to his abdomen.

Bile spurted from his mouth as he fell, writhing in pain. Lena followed with another kick, knocking him unconscious. This time, she remained vigilant, swiftly restraining his hands behind his back with handcuffs. Only then did she breathe a sigh of relief.

"That was close," she murmured. "Luckily, my agility and quick reflexes saved the day!"

Cameron retracted the second silver needle concealed between his fingertips, having witnessed Lena subdue their assailant. After dealing with the thug, Lena turned to Cameron, her fury rising. His earlier distraction, nearly costing her her life, had enraged her.

"You damn bastard!" she cursed.

Cameron was bewildered. He'd saved her, yet she was cursing him?

"What are you looking at? Keep staring and I'll gouge your eyeballs out with my bare hands!"

Lena's anger stemmed from her unawareness of Cameron's intervention. Cameron, unjustly scolded, replied with a hint of coldness, "Colonel Bailey, did I say or do anything to offend you?"

"You didn't offend me, but I wouldn't have been attacked if you hadn't distracted me," Lena retorted, displeased.

Cameron was dumbfounded. He realized her overconfidence had given the assailant an opening when she failed to immediately restrain him after knocking him out. How had she ended up blaming him?

"Colonel Bailey, it was your own mistake. Why are you blaming me?" Cameron said frankly. "Moreover, I helped you. Is there any need for this?" He refused to be made a scapegoat.

"My mistake? You helped me?" Lena stared in disbelief. An outsider questioning a colonel? And daring to claim he'd helped her? She felt deeply humiliated.

Anger surged. "My mistake, and you helped me? Who do you think you are? Do I look like I need your help? Don't forget, I scared off those mercenaries!"

"So, you also believe I'm not working with them?" Cameron asked calmly. "Can I leave now?" He'd said his piece and wanted to end the pointless argument.

"You!" Lena's blood pressure spiked. Her camouflage short-sleeved shirt strained against her full chest, heaving violently. She was furious. This man was a master of finding loopholes!
