Chapter 100
"Hastard, you're very capable, right? Bring it on. Let's see what you've got. I'll give you the upper hand by using only one hand!" Lena challenged Cameron to a fight, her rage evident.
Cameron looked at the short-tempered woman. He said nonchalantly, "Colonel Bailey, you should know better than I do how dangerous it is to spar here."
Lena was dumbfounded. A conflict in this location would only benefit any assailants. While reasonable from someone else, Cameron's statement only irritated her. He seemed like a wimp, always putting on an act. She glared at him with hatred.
Laura intervened, "Colonel Bailey, I can vouch for him. He's not involved with these people." She'd noticed Lena's misunderstanding.
Lena was taken aback. She hadn't expected Ms. Jones, the "Ice Queen," to defend a man. Laura seemed less icy towards the opposite sex than rumored. Lena smiled, but felt disdain. "My apologies, Ms. Jones. I'm just doing my job." She wasn't letting Cameron off easily.
Seemingly unsatisfied, Lena added, "Ms. Jones, I'm just reminding you not to let anyone with ulterior motives deceive you and cloud your judgment. You'll be a witness for the defense."
Laura responded confidently, "Colonel Bailey, thank you for the reminder. But I don't think I'll misjudge him." She wouldn't allow anyone to speak ill of Cameron.
Lena smiled faintly. "Since you're so confident, let's pretend I said nothing."
Laura smiled back. "Colonel Bailey, can Cameron leave now?"
Their conversation seemed casual, but the two women were secretly competing, both being proud and strong-willed. Laura wouldn't let anyone speak badly of Cameron; Lena trusted her own judgment.
While they competed, the man Lena had knocked unconscious twitched his right index finger. Unaware, Lena smiled. "I'm sorry, Ms. Jones, he can't leave until he's cleared of suspicion."
Laura frowned, but before she could speak, Cameron intervened. "Ms. Jones, don't worry about me. Go back to the car. Have someone from your family pick you up." His tone was cold, but Laura knew he was worried about her safety; it was unsafe to remain outside, a clear target.
"Okay," Laura said softly, her expression softening. She returned to the car and called Otis.
Seeing how easily Cameron persuaded Laura, Lena felt a jolt. What was their relationship?
"Are you Laura's bodyguard?" Lena asked.
"No," Cameron replied.
"Then what is your relationship?"
"None."
"Nothing? Do you think I'll believe you?"
"That's your prerogative."
Lena was furious and about to lash out when a chill ran down her spine. She turned her head. The man she'd knocked unconscious had regained consciousness! He leaped up, a dagger appearing in his hand, aiming it at Lena's throat.
Lena shuddered in fear. The close-range attack, coupled with her unpreparedness, left her no effective countermeasure. She could only watch helplessly as the dagger lunged toward her throat.
