Chapter 11

Cameron’s gaze sharpened.

“Laura actually kept that photo?”

Laura sensed Cameron’s gaze, and her previously calm heart fluttered. Did he see it too?

Laura reverted to her cold demeanor. Acting as though she’d just remembered something, she said, “Regarding the photo you just saw, I hope you can keep it a secret. It’s the only photo of myself I think was taken relatively well, so I’ve been keeping it all these years.”

“Don’t worry, Ms. Jones. I won’t tell anyone,” Dakota assured her.

Laura nodded.

However, Cameron’s eyes held a hint of self-mockery. Was it simply the quality of the photo that had prompted her to keep it all this time?

Laura looked at Cameron’s self-mocking gaze, and her heart fluttered again. She knew he misunderstood her. She wanted to tell him what was on her mind, but…

“What photo, Ms. Jones?” Peggy asked, appearing from behind Laura.

“Nothing,” Laura replied, turning to Dakota. “Ms. Jennings, please take the contract and review it. If there are no issues, contact me by phone. My assistant will then arrange a meeting to finalize the contract.”

Laura was in no mood to continue the conversation after this unexpected interruption. She just wanted to end it quickly.

“Okay, Ms. Jones,” Dakota said, noticing Laura’s distraction. It must be because of the photo.

It was clear Laura didn’t want anyone to know about her past romantic experiences. But who was the man in the photo who had captured her heart? Well, never mind. She didn’t know him anyway.

Dakota smiled at Cameron after securing the contract. “Cameron, let’s go.”

“Okay,” Cameron nodded, his preoccupation evident.

Dakota was slightly surprised but didn’t dwell on it. She assumed he was also thinking about the photo.

She left the room after saying goodbye to Laura and Peggy. Cameron followed.

His gaze was cold as he passed Laura. He didn’t even greet her.

Cameron’s attitude angered Peggy. She muttered, “What a despicable guy! How rude! He’s really lucky to have met such a knowledgeable and reasonable woman like Ms. Jennings!” Peggy had a high opinion of Dakota and felt Cameron was unworthy of her. “That cowardly and impolite guy!”

“Ms. Jones, did you choose to cooperate with Ms. Jennings because of him?” Peggy asked.

“Mmm,” Laura didn’t deny it.

“Ms. Jones, why are you helping him like this? That guy doesn’t appreciate your kindness at all. Honestly, I can’t see what’s so good about him!” Peggy said resentfully. Even though she knew Laura might reprimand her, she had to speak her mind.

“There are some things you don’t understand,” Laura responded. “Anyway, it’s something I owe him.”

Peggy was astonished. This guy had actually made Laura say that! But she still couldn’t see what was so special about him.

Peggy walked to the window to see if Cameron had left. She saw a military green pickup truck parked at the hotel entrance. It seemed to be Lena’s.

Peggy’s eyes lit up. “Ms. Jones, it looks like Colonel Bailey’s car is parked downstairs.”

“Lena?” Laura furrowed her eyebrows and looked down. She saw the military green pickup truck.

Didn’t Otis already inform Lena? Why was she still looking for Cameron?

“Let’s go and see,” Laura said, concern for Cameron evident on her face.
