Chapter 121
“The world’s wealthiest person and a leader in military and political circles?” Lena’s eyes widened in disbelief. She nearly slammed on the brakes.
“Do you believe me?” Cameron asked with a mischievous grin.
“Believe you? If that’s the case, then I must be one of the top five martial artists in the world, capable of destroying you in minutes!” Lena rolled her eyes. She clearly wasn’t buying his story; it was just another one of Cameron’s tall tales. Cameron anticipated this reaction, explaining his earlier hesitancy.
“So, you must be a national-level secret agent. Is that why you can’t disclose your identity?” Lena asked seriously. Considering Cameron’s skills and his deliberate concealment, this was her most plausible explanation.
“Secret agent?” Cameron raised an eyebrow.
“Or not?” Lena frowned, her gaze wary. “Don’t tell me you’re actually a foreign spy?”
“A foreign spy?” Cameron was taken aback, then chuckled. “Well, okay, I am indeed a secret agent. I’m Agent 003, assigned by the Ministry of State Security.” Given Lena’s disbelief, he decided to simply go with it.
“Hmph, just as I thought,” Lena said proudly, tilting her chin up. She was convinced.
Cameron was speechless. Why did honesty lead to disbelief, while a fabricated story gained credibility? And what kind of agent designation was “003,” anyway?
“What’s with that look?” Lena asked, noticing his expression. It annoyed her slightly; she felt mocked.
“Nothing, I’m just impressed by how you guessed my identity so precisely,” Cameron said.
“Of course!” Lena lifted her chin higher.
Cameron was amused. He speculated that despite her fiery demeanor, Lena might not be the sharpest tool in the shed. [Remove the website promotion]
“By the way, Colonel Bailey, do you know who hired the mercenaries that attacked Laura, or which organization they might be from?” Cameron suddenly remembered the attack and sought clues from Lena.
Lena’s gaze sharpened at the mention of the attack. “Right now, I’m not entirely sure. I only know they were foreign mercenaries who infiltrated the country a week ago. I’ve been closely monitoring their movements. I didn’t expect their target to be Laura.”
“Mercenaries who entered the country a week ago?” Cameron echoed. “Colonel Bailey, didn’t you capture one of their accomplices? Did you get any useful information from him?”
“Don’t even mention it,” Lena said irritably. “That guy committed suicide by poisoning himself while under my subordinates’ custody.”
“Suicide by poisoning?” Cameron’s eyes narrowed. “They came well-prepared, indeed.”
“Yes, but there’s still one accomplice who hasn’t shown up,” Lena added.
“Another accomplice?” Cameron perked up.
“Yes,” Lena continued. “They entered the country as a group of seven. Including the sniper on the mountain, there were only six at the scene, so one—presumably their leader—is missing. Remind Laura to be extra cautious. Since their plan failed, that person will likely not give up.”
“I understand,” Cameron said, narrowing his eyes. The leader would likely have a lot of information, perhaps even leading them to the mastermind.
Cameron pondered ways to lure the leader out. Then Lena’s gaze shifted; she noticed a suspicious vehicle following them in the rearview mirror.
