Chapter 122

A white BMW had been trailing them for some time. Lena's expression grew solemn. "It seems we're being followed," she said.

"Being followed?" Cameron's expression changed. He hadn't sensed any hostility.

"Do you see that white BMW behind us? It's been following us the whole way," Lena said quietly.

Cameron finally checked the rearview mirror. He spotted a white BMW.

"Dakota?" He recognized the car. "Isn't that Dakota's BMW 320i?"

Lena was surprised. "Isn't that your girlfriend?"

"Uh not yet," Cameron hesitated.

"That'll be soon enough," Lena said with a knowing smile. "She's probably worried about you."

"Colonel Bailey, anyone would be worried with me as their personal escort," Cameron quipped, raising an eyebrow.

"You might have a point," Lena muttered, conceding his point.

"So, Colonel Bailey, you might as well let me go now. I've answered all your questions," Cameron said, wanting to alleviate Dakota's worry.

"Alright, I might need to contact you later, so leave me your number," Lena said reasonably.

Cameron, finding Lena decent, gave her his number. After saving it, Lena pulled over. The white BMW stopped as well. Cameron got out and waved to Dakota.

"Dakota!"

"Cameron!" Dakota rushed out, concern etched on her face. "Are you okay?"

"I'm fine," Cameron reassured her, smiling.

Lena greeted Dakota. "Hello, Ms. Jennings."

"Colonel Bailey. Hi," Dakota replied politely. "Can he go now?"

"Yes. I just needed Cameron to clarify some doubts. Don't worry, he hasn't committed any crimes," Lena clarified, wanting to ease Dakota's anxiety.

"That's a relief. Thank you, Colonel Bailey," Dakota said gratefully.

"No need to thank me. Thank your boyfriend for his cooperation," Lena said, smiling, deliberately using the term to encourage them.

Dakota blushed, while Cameron shook his head at Lena's antics.

"Well, I'll be going now," Lena said, returning to her vehicle. The army-green pickup truck drove away.

"I'll drive you back," Dakota offered gently.

"Sure," Cameron agreed, and they got into the car.

Driving toward Azure Residence, Dakota asked, "Cameron, what did Colonel Bailey want? What was that about the crime scene?"

"It's nothing serious," Cameron explained, using his prepared story. "I was helping Laura with her car when we were attacked by thugs on our way back from the police station. Colonel Bailey had questions about the scene, so I helped."

Dakota's eyes widened. "Ms. Jones was attacked? You weren't hurt?"

"No, just ordinary thugs," Cameron reassured her, smiling.

"That's good," Dakota sighed in relief. "No wonder Ms. Jones was so nice to you. You helped her."

"Yeah," Cameron agreed, resolving the question about his relationship with Laura. Lena had inadvertently helped him.

"By the way, is the issue with your private files resolved?" Dakota asked.

"Yes, the military's system was down for maintenance. Colonel Bailey had her colleague check again, and it showed up," Cameron explained.

"That's great. Everything worked out," Dakota said happily.

"Let me take you back."

"Okay," Cameron replied warmly. They continued their journey in good spirits.

Meanwhile, Laura stood before the French windows in the hotel's presidential suite, gazing at the cityscape. She seemed troubled. She'd just received a call from her fiancé, who'd heard about her trip to Yrando. He'd said he would join her a few days after returning from a warzone.
