Chapter 131
A cold light flashed, striking Jeff's hand.
"Gah!" he gasped, withdrawing his hand in pain. A cold, precise silver needle was embedded in the back of his hand, and blood seeped slowly from the puncture wound. Simultaneously, footsteps echoed from the stairway entrance.
"Who's there?" Jeff looked sharply toward the sound. Cameron appeared, stern-faced, at the top of the stairs.
"Cameron!" Peggy cried, her heart leaping. She wondered why this cowardly man was there.
Lena turned to Cameron, her vision blurring. "You finally showed up…" Her warning to Cameron was weak and breathy: "Be careful. He's dangerous…"
Cameron noticed Lena's drugged state. "Did you do this?" His gaze shifted to Jeff, who remained cold and indifferent.
"Who are you?" Jeff glared, irritated by the minor injury.
"Now I'm asking the questions," Cameron said, his expression unwavering.
"I don't like the look in your eyes!" Jeff's rage flared.
"Is that so?" Cameron remained detached, aware of Lena's deteriorating condition. He took a step forward.
"If you take one more step, I'll kill her!" Jeff threatened, pointing a scalpel at Lena's head.
"Then kill her. She means nothing to me," Cameron said, continuing forward without hesitation.
Jeff faltered, his threat ineffective.
"Cameron, do you have any shred of humanity left?" Peggy shouted, her budding respect for him dissolving.
Cameron raised an eyebrow. Did these women not realize he was trying to save them? Showing concern would only give Jeff leverage. He was waiting for the right moment to strike.
As Cameron advanced, Jeff retreated, sensing the danger. Accustomed to living dangerously, he recognized Cameron's expertise. Survival meant avoiding confrontation.
He quickly turned to Peggy, his expression vicious. "What if I kill her? You're here to save her, right?"
"Sorry, that's not the case," Cameron replied with a slight smile.
Jeff's pupils contracted, then widened as he realized Cameron was toying with him. "You think you can deceive me? If you're not here to save her, why are you here?"
"I came to learn who's pulling your strings. Their fate is none of my concern," Cameron said coldly. "Besides, as you've seen, she doesn't seem to like me much. Wouldn't her death rid me of a nuisance?"
Jeff was shaken. Could someone so casual about death be anything but cold-blooded?
Peggy, stunned and overcome with fear and emotion, cursed at Cameron. "Because of you, I ended up in this mess in Yrando, kidnapped to this place! You asshole, I'll never forgive you!" She broke down in tears.
