Chapter 138
Cameron was showering in his villa when he sneezed violently, sending a shiver down his spine.
"What's happening?" he exclaimed, startled.
He quickly scanned his surroundings, finding no one. "Someone must be talking about me," he murmured, sniffing.
He soon changed into his robe and went to the bedroom. He noticed five missed calls from Lona on his phone. He immediately returned her call, wanting to ask about her condition, but she had blocked him.
"Hmm?" Cameron frowned. Perhaps he had been too rude during the detoxification process, causing Lena (presumably a typo for Lona) to blacklist him in anger. He quickly dismissed the thought. After this incident, they probably wouldn't see each other again. After all, Lena was a colonel in the capital, in Yrando primarily to track down foreign mercenaries who had infiltrated the country. Those mercenaries had been eradicated following the arrest of their leader. Lena would likely return to the capital. He hoped she could forgive his insensitivity.
Cameron chuckled, shaking his head. He clearly had a positive impression of her. Unknown to him, Lena was frantically searching for him in Yrando.
She regretted blocking and deleting his contact information in a fit of rage. Otherwise, she would have found him and severely punished him! "That bastard! Rogue! Shameless man!" she raged. She had trusted him implicitly, never expecting such treachery. If her subordinates hadn't stopped her, she would have driven a tank to Yrando and destroyed him!
Meanwhile, Cameron remained oblivious to Lena's fury, waiting for Lord Blackheart's call. Soon, his phone rang. It was Lord Blackheart.
Cameron answered, greeted by Lord Blackheart's respectful tone. "Sir, as instructed, I've sent someone to escort Ms. Lee safely back to her hotel."
"Hmm. She didn't ask about anything, right?" Cameron inquired.
"Ms. Lee only asked if Colonel Bailey had requested my assistance."
Lord Blackheart, a long-time associate, understood his priorities.
"How did you answer her?" Cameron pressed.
"I said 'yes'."
"Good." This answer would avoid further explanation. Cameron wanted to minimize contact with Peggy and Laura.
"What about that guy? Has he confessed everything?" Cameron shifted the conversation to the main point. The call indicated the interrogation was nearly complete.
"Yes," Lord Blackheart reported. "His name is Jeff Hancock, a mercenary from Ehainia. He was hired by a woman, 'Ms. J,' to assassinate Ms. Jones."
"Ms. J?" Cameron frowned. He hadn't expected a woman to be behind Laura's attempted assassination.
"Yes, sir," Lord Blackheart confirmed. (The promotional text for FindNovel.net has been removed.)
"Any more information?"
"That's all he knows."
Lord Blackheart continued, "But I've investigated the account that sent him the money. Although a fake IP was used, we traced it. The account is located in Leving, the same city as Ms. Jones."
