Chapter 158

"Cameron!"

Laura's face softened as she saw Cameron approaching.

"Ms. Jones."

Cameron's tone was indifferent, and he avoided eye contact. She understood his reluctance, a sadness washing over her. Still, she said gently, "Get in the car. I'll take you somewhere."

"Mhm."

Cameron entered the car.

"Let's go, Perez," Laura said, her tone reverting to its usual coldness.

"Yes, Ms. Jones!"

Perez quickly started the car, wondering about Cameron, whose treatment differed vastly from others. He'd never heard of him before.

The car ride was silent. Cameron stared out the window, keeping his distance from Laura. She glanced at him several times; her coldness melting into tenderness whenever her eyes met his. Seven years had matured him; it had been a long time since she'd seen him so close. She wished time could stand still.

Though he looked out the window, Cameron wasn't truly seeing the scenery. He didn't know where she was taking him. Taking a deep breath, he decided to ask. He turned, catching her gentle gaze. His heart pounded.

Laura was surprised by his sudden turn. After a moment of fluster, she composed herself. "The scenery is beautiful, isn't it? You've been looking out the window."

"Yes," Cameron replied curtly, his mind preoccupied by her gentle expression. Her kindness reminded him of the photo that had fallen from her bag and Dakota's words.

Could Laura still have feelings for him?

The thought caused a frown to crease his brow. He felt inexplicably irritable.

"What's wrong, Cameron?" Laura asked, her concern evident.

He shook his head. "Nothing."

Given their current relationship, asking about the photo felt inappropriate. He didn't want to relive the heart-wrenching pain of seven years ago. Once was enough.

He took a deep breath, turning away from Laura to look out the window again.

Seeing his rejection, a wave of sadness washed over Laura. They had once been in love, but

Lost in thought, she sighed. She was powerless to change the past. If she hadn't deceived him with a cold lie, forcing him to leave the Jones family and making him hate her, his life would have been in danger. To protect him, she had no choice. She had fought her family, begging her father for mercy, but to no avail.

"Ms. Jones, we're at the waterfront."

Perez's respectful voice broke through her reverie.
