Chapter 164
Cameron's body stiffened. What did Laura want? She had strangely mentioned the past and then hugged his neck—an intimate gesture reserved for couples. She used to do this when he carried her on his back, but their current relationship made it inappropriate.
"Ms. Jones, isn't this inappropriate?" Cameron raised an eyebrow, unable to suppress the question.
"I'm just tired; it's more comfortable," Laura said gently. "Besides, it'll be easier for you to carry me."
"Ms. Jones, if others see us, it will affect your reputation. I won't bear the responsibility," Cameron said, feigning coldness.
"It doesn't matter," she replied softly. There was no one else present; even if someone saw them, so what? Laura had always restrained herself for her family, but in Yrando, she intended to follow her desires.
Cameron's heart jolted. He hadn't expected such a response and was momentarily perplexed. Was it guilt? Or something else? She had proposed breaking up years ago. Now, she was unconcerned about others knowing their relationship. Was she teasing him?
Cameron's mood soured. Laura remained silent, unlike him; she was savoring their rare alone time, knowing it would soon end. She planned a grand ceremony for him, then would leave Yrando and resume her aloof persona as Ms. Jones. This was her only chance. Happiness, however, is fleeting; all journeys reach their end.
Cameron carried Laura to the waterfront exit.

"Ms. Jones, we're here," he said coldly.
Laura's joy subsided; she realized they had arrived. She hummed softly.
"Can I put you down?" Cameron asked. Going outside meant risking being seen.
"Okay," Laura nodded.
Cameron set her down, preparing to leave.
"Cameron, don't go yet!"
She struggled into her broken high heels, barely standing, and stopped him.
"Is there something else?" Cameron turned, his cold demeanor masking his true feelings.
"Promise you'll attend the grand ceremony. It's my only wish!" Laura pleaded, hoping his presence would enhance her reputation throughout Yrando and show Madison the man she had betrayed.
"Okay" Cameron sighed, relenting.
"Really?" Laura's eyes lit up. "I'll wait for you. If you're free, supervise the work. Tell me if you're unhappy with the design. I'll go now. I'll wait for you!"
She left happily, heading for the black Lincoln. Watching her struggle in her mismatched heels, Cameron felt a complex mix of emotions. He meant to ask about the photograph, but she was already gone.
He shook his head as he left the waterfront, the faint scent of her perfume and the lingering warmth of her hug still on his hands.
