Chapter 174
A sharp voice pierced Cameron's eardrums, causing intense pain. Realizing what was happening, he quickly covered Peggy's mouth.
"Umm!" Peggy's muffled protests were indistinct. Her eyes widened in terror at the unexpected visitor in the women's changing room. Her legs, clad in black stockings, flailed, nearly striking Cameron's groin. He stepped back just in time.
"Stop screaming," he whispered urgently. "I'm not here to peep. There's an assassin nearby!"
Fear flickered across Peggy's face, then she recognized Cameron. Seeing her struggle cease, he removed his hand.
"Cameron, you big pervert!" she exclaimed, immediately glaring at him with intense hostility. She was convinced his explanation was a cover for voyeuristic behavior; she knew no one else could be present, let alone an assassin.
"Peggy, I'm telling the truth," Cameron said, shaking his head at her disbelief. A thought struck him. Scrutinizing her, he asked, "Peggy, what brings you here?" Changing stockings in such a place during the day seemed odd.
"That's my question for you! What's a man doing in the women's changing room?" Peggy retorted, her cheeks flushing angrily at the thought of him watching her.
"Uh" Cameron paused. "I sensed danger in the lobby, seemingly coming from this changing room."
"Why didn't you check the men's changing room then?" Peggy challenged.
"I did. It was empty," Cameron replied.
Peggy remained skeptical. "You claim you weren't spying on me. Then why didn't I hear your footsteps?"
"Look, I was here to catch an assassin. Wouldn't making noise alert them?" He added, "You haven't answered my question. Why are you here?"

"It's all because of you!" Peggy huffed, visibly irritated.
"Because of me?" Cameron was taken aback.
"Yes, because of you!" Peggy fumed. "If Ms. Jones hadn't decided to host some big celebration for you, I wouldn't have had to accompany her to supervise the site. And I wouldn't have gotten my stockings caught on that damn steel rebar!" She added, "I don't know what Ms. Jones sees in you. She's much too involved in this trivial matter!"
"Laura is doing this for me?" Cameron was moved. He hadn't expected her personal supervision.
"Yes, you're just lucky!" Peggy said with annoyance, adding that she'd never seen Laura so invested in anything or anyone. She felt Alan would be jealous.
Cameron sighed, his resolve to meet Laura and understand the situation strengthened. Suddenly remembering something, his eyes flashed with urgency. "Where is Ms. Jones now? Where is she?" With the assassin missing, he knew the consequences of the assassin finding Laura alone would be severe.
