Chapter 185

“Laura, tell me the truth. Were you struggling with something difficult seven years ago?”

Cameron’s lips moved with considerable effort. His voice was exceptionally hoarse and weak, as if a gust of wind might extinguish it.

“Seven years ago?”

Laura was startled. Then, she understood his question. A wave of bitterness rose in her throat. So, that was what he most wanted to know? Was she truly that important to him?

“You fool… I already told you everything seven years ago!” she said, contradicting her true feelings.

“Heh, is that so? It seems I misunderstood,” Cameron chuckled hoarsely.

“You idiot, why are you asking about this? You know how I feel about you, so why did you still save me?”

Laura’s heart pounded violently. Though she tried to sound harsh, tears streamed down her face. However, Cameron’s consciousness was fading, and he couldn’t perceive her words as the lies they were.

“Heh, then I’ll be a fool this time,” he said weakly. “I’ve already been deceived once, so it doesn’t matter if it happens again, but… this should be the last time…”

He closed his eyes tightly, exhausted. All he wanted was to sleep.

“It won’t be! It absolutely won’t be the last time! Cameron, you have to hold on. You have to keep being a fool for me forever! I won’t allow you to die. Do you hear me, Cameron?” Laura shouted in panic. She couldn’t let him fall asleep there; it would truly be the end.

“Laura, you’re really controlling,” Cameron chuckled hoarsely, his voice as thin as a thread. “Ever since I met you, you’ve been nothing but trouble for me… but I’ve never regretted it… I…”

His voice trailed off. Laura’s heart leaped with fear.

“Cameron, Cameron!” she cried.

“I’m here…” He rallied slightly, continuing, “From the moment I met you, I knew you were exceptional. But at that time, I didn’t have any feelings for you at all. You were as cold as ice…”

“And then what? I was cold as ice, and then what?” Laura asked anxiously.

But Cameron didn’t respond. His consciousness slipped into darkness.

In his fading mind, a glimmer of light appeared: a memory of an unkempt young man and an aloof young woman meeting at an airport. The young man extended a hand.

“Hello, I’m Cameron. I’ll be your personal bodyguard for the next week. Nice to meet you.”

“Laura,” the young woman replied coldly before walking toward her private plane.

“Laura, huh? That’s a nice name,” the young man murmured with a smile, following her.

In the ruins, a faint smile touched Cameron’s lips. Laura’s voice, filled with despair, reached him.

“Cameron, I won’t allow you to die, do you hear me? You wanted to know about seven years ago, right? I lied to you back then! I’ve never forgotten you, not even for a moment! Please, Cameron, wake up… I’m begging you… Wake up…”

The extraneous promotional text at the end was removed. The overall punctuation, grammar, and flow have been improved for clarity and readability.
