"You are you bleeding?" Laura asked, her voice trembling.

"Just a scratch," Cameron said, smiling. "Nothing serious."

"Cameron, don't lie to me," Laura said, her face paling. He had been shot twice and fallen from a great height while holding her. How could it be just a scratch?

"Heh, I said I'm fine," Cameron rasped. "By the way, when did you start caring about others? It doesn't match your aloof personality at all."

"You still have the mind to joke at a time like this" Laura's voice choked, tears welling in her eyes.

"I'm not joking," Cameron began, but was interrupted by a violent coughing fit. His arm, supporting his weight, weakened, threatening to give way under the boulders above.

"Cameron!" Laura cried, panic rising. She felt the blood he coughed up.

"I told you, I'm fine" Cameron strained, lifting himself slightly to create more space for Laura beneath him.

Laura understood. Her heart shuddered. She couldn't clearly see Cameron or her surroundings, but she knew he was using his body to shield her from being crushed.

"Why why did you save me? Was it worth it?" Laura's emotions surged, blurring her vision with tears.

"Do you know how noisy you are? Conserve your energy for the rescue team," Cameron rasped, his consciousness fading. "Laura, listen carefully. Don't shout if I fall asleep. Save your strength for the rescue team."

"It won't happen! We'll be fine!" Laura's voice trembled. She sensed his preparation for the worst.

However, Cameron stopped responding.

"Cameron, can you hear me?" Laura's voice grew frantic. "Are you okay? Wake up! Answer me! Cameron!"

Laura reached for Cameron's breath, accidentally brushing a nearby steel rod. The contact jolted Cameron awake, his face contorting in pain.

"Don't don't touch there"

"Cameron, your body" Laura's hands and feet grew icy; she hesitated to move. She felt his blood on the steel rod. He had been pierced by it while protecting her.

"Don't worry, I won't die," Cameron said. "But you, do you know you're being quite noisy? I really can't stand women who talk too much." His voice was weaker still. He would have passed out if Laura hadn't agitated the wound with the rod.

"Okay, Cameron. I won't disturb you anymore," Laura said. "But please, don't fall asleep. I'll talk to you; tell you anything you want to hear. You said you had something to ask me, right?" Her voice quivered. She kept talking to keep him conscious.

"Yeah I do have something to ask you" Cameron's voice trailed off. The events of seven years ago resurfaced.
