Chapter 193
In the presidential suite at the Caesar Hotel, Laura stood by the window, a cold expression on her face as she watched the bustling scene below. Peggy stood behind her.
"Ms. Jones," Peggy reported, "Otis is out of danger. Cameron has also awakened from his coma without any major issues."
"He's awake?" Laura's gaze softened slightly.
"Yes, Ms. Jones. Would you like to see him?"
"No need," Laura replied, shaking her head. A hint of sadness flickered in her eyes.
"But if you don't see him, I'm afraid he might misunderstand," Peggy hesitated, voicing her concern. She had previously disliked Cameron, but his sacrifice to save Laura deeply moved her. Although annoying at times, he always stepped up when it mattered most. She didn't want to see their relationship deteriorate further.
"Let him misunderstand," Laura said casually. Deeply suppressed emotions simmered beneath her calm exterior. She couldn't forget how Cameron shielded her with his body under the rubble, creating a space of safety. Even in his coma, he remained in that protective position when the rescue team pulled them from the debris. Six medical personnel struggled to lift him onto a stretcher. The memory still pained her. She blamed herself for nearly costing him his life, underestimating his determination to protect her. She would have preferred to endure the pain of the steel rods herself, to have been the one to die. She didn't want to cause him any more trouble.
To avoid further complications, Laura chose to distance herself from Cameron.
"But Ms. Jones—" Peggy began.
"Peggy, stop," Laura interrupted.
Peggy fell silent, her gaze fixed on Laura's desolate figure silhouetted against the setting sun. She understood Laura's strong will and her determination to bear everything alone.
"Peggy, have you finished arranging the matter I assigned you?" Laura's cold tone interrupted Peggy's thoughts.
Peggy blinked, regaining her composure. "I've arranged for Otis to handle it, Ms. Jones. Are you sure you want to confront her now?"
Laura nodded faintly, the icy look on her face intensifying. She had always indulged this person in the past because of their unique relationship, but this time, she refused to let it slide. Peggy sensed Laura's anger.
"Ms. Jones, there's one more thing," Peggy said, taking a deep breath.
"What is it?"
"After Mr. Xander learned of your injury, he requested early leave from the battlefield to see you."
"Tell him I'm fine. I'll be returning to Leving in four days."
"But Ms. Jones, you know Mr. Xander's personality. Once he decides on something, it's impossible to stop him."
"Use whatever means necessary," Laura stated firmly.
Only four days remained until the ceremony. Before then, she couldn't allow Alan and Cameron to meet.
