Chapter 197
"Yes," Cameron replied, glancing nervously at Dakota.
Dakota felt a sudden tightness in her chest. She looked at Cameron and asked, "Because of what happened?"
"Because of an accident yesterday," Cameron said, taking a deep breath.
"An accident yesterday?" Dakota's eyes narrowed. "You went to see Ms. Jones yesterday?"
"Yeah," Cameron nodded. "There was an unexpected incident, so I got injured."
"Dakota," Cameron began, a tingling sensation on his scalp, "what if I told you that I knew Ms. Jones from before? Would you think I lied to you and dislike me?"
He decided to be honest. Dakota's heart trembled. Cameron had known Laura for a long time. This explained Laura's special attention and the large contract.
Dakota had initially doubted Laura's claim of valuing her abilities. She understood her abilities weren't enough to attract Laura's attention, and she had suspected Cameron's relationship with her. When Cameron denied knowing Laura, she had believed him. But something felt off; her lingering doubts were confirmed. She wondered why he'd lied about something positive.
"Cameron, why did you hide that you knew Ms. Jones? This is a good thing, isn't it?" Dakota was puzzled.
"It's because of a past I'd rather not revisit," Cameron explained.
"A past you'd rather not revisit?" Dakota was stunned. Then it dawned on her. "I see," she murmured, pursing her lips. "Are you angry?"
"I'm not angry," Dakota shook her head.
"Really?" Cameron looked unsure.
"Really," Dakota nodded with a gentle smile. "Thank you, Cameron, for telling me this."
"Um Why do I feel like you're acting strange?" Cameron's scalp tingled slightly. He thought a girl would be upset if she didn't ask further questions about his unpleasant past, but unexpectedly, Dakota didn't.
"Am I that petty in your eyes? I understand you," Dakota wrinkled her delicate nose. "Everyone has their own past and secrets, right? What matters is the present. You're acquainted with Ms. Jones because you're excellent. Why would I be angry?"
If she blamed anyone, it would be herself for not being good enough and for depending on Cameron's connections.
Cameron felt his heart stir. He looked at Dakota, whose understanding warmed him deeply. "Thank you, Dakota."
"What are you thanking me for? I should be thanking you for your honesty," Dakota said. He could have easily avoided this explanation, but he chose to be open, showing he cared about her feelings.
"Silly girl," Cameron smiled warmly.
"I'm not silly, you are," Dakota pouted.
She contemplated his sudden honesty. Was he planning to leave Yrando and move to Leving? Dakota suddenly felt uneasy.
