Chapter 279
Silence filled the banquet hall. Every eye was fixed on Cameron; his actions seemed suicidal. He remained composed, however, holding Tara's hand as they slowly walked to the center of the stage.
"Don't you dare!" Kelvin's menacing warning echoed.
Cameron ignored him, smiling faintly at Tara. "DJ, could you please play some music for me?" he politely requested the sound engineer below the stage.
"Uh? Oh, sure." The DJ, still somewhat stunned, quickly complied.
Soon, a beautiful melody filled the room. With the music playing, Cameron politely invited Tara to dance. She accepted. He gently embraced her slender waist with his right hand, his left lightly interlacing with hers. They danced gracefully.
Tara felt the warmth of his touch, her heart quivering slightly. It was her first dance with a man, her first experience of such intimate contact. Strangely, she didn't resist, even though a simple glance from a man usually made her uncomfortable. She wondered if it was because she knew Cameron was helping her.
"Dr. Smith, is there something on your mind?" Cameron whispered, breaking her thoughts.
She looked up at him and gently bit her lip. "Thank you, Cameron."
"You're welcome," he replied with a smile, continuing to dance.
Meanwhile, Kelvin trembled with rage, watching their affectionate exchange. He almost crushed the microphone in his hands. The sound of the crushing microphone snapped Tara from her reverie. Seeing Kelvin's murderous gaze, she worried about Cameron's safety again.
"Cameron, maybe we should stop," she whispered.
"What's wrong, Dr. Smith? This doesn't seem like you." Cameron smiled.
"I just feel we shouldn't get you into trouble," Tara said, biting her lip.
"Are you worried about me?"
Cameron chuckled, his eyes fixed on Tara, making her blush slightly.
"Yeah," she nodded.
"He's not really that big of a trouble," Cameron chuckled, his calm confidence sending a shiver down Tara's spine. She felt inexplicably reassured.
"Let's continue," he said softly.
"Okay," Tara nodded gently, lowering her gaze shyly.
They danced gracefully under the spotlight, drawing admiring glances. For the moment, they were the stars of the party. But their hearts trembled as the crowd's gaze shifted to Kelvin's murderous face. They suspected Cameron might not survive the night. Sighs echoed across the room. Archie, sitting in the corner, glared at Cameron with hatred, anticipating his demise.
The beautiful melody ended. As the music ceased, Cameron and Tara, bathed in the spotlight, exchanged smiles and fell silent.
"Kid, the dance is over. Now, can you remove your hands from Tara?" Kelvin's impatient voice cut through the silence.
Tara's heart skipped a beat; her body stiffened. Cameron remained calm, his expression unchanged.
He spoke casually, seemingly oblivious to the threat. "Mr. Zimmer, aren't you being a bit too overbearing? I'm just holding my girlfriend. It's none of your business, is it?"
"Did you hear me properly? I said, remove your hands from Tara!" Kelvin said through gritted teeth.
"And if I refuse?" Cameron smiled faintly.
"Then you can go to hell!"
Kelvin's face twisted in a grimace. A moment later, he reached for a gun and aimed it at Cameron's head.
