Stephanie’s tears flowed down, and all her grievances now seemed like a flood.

Sebastian patted her back gently. “Okay, I’ll take responsibility. Stop crying, will you?”

“You were supposed to take responsibility,” said Stephanie.

She sniffled, wiping her tears on Sebastian’s shirt, leaving it damp.

“You dirty little thing.”

“Well, I’m yours,” she replied petulantly.

Sebastian pinched her face. Before he could say anything, Elliot Grant’s phone call came again. It seemed like Sebastian had something urgent to attend to. He hung up the phone but didn’t linger with Stephanie.

“It’s still not dawn yet. You should go to sleep now?”

Stephanie asked, “Are you going out?”

He gave a soft “hmm,” kissed her forehead, and stood up. Stephanie thought of the scarf, which, besides her own blood, also had a few other dried bloodstains on it. The moment Sebastian turned around, she grabbed his clothes.

“Is it dangerous?”

She knew what kind of business the Lucano family was involved in. She was aware of the dangers that Sebastian faced on this path. Even though he was strong enough, she still felt fear and worry. Sebastian turned around and met her worried gaze, which softened a part of his heart even more.

“Don’t worry.”

He uttered the two words and pulled his clothes out of her hand, tucking her in and leaving the room. Sebastian left. Stephanie let out a groan and buried her face in the quilt. Her heart was still racing.

Sebastian said he would take responsibility, and she wondered how exactly he planned to do so. By marrying me? she thought. In her fantasies, she had imagined her wedding with Sebastian countless times, but never truly believed it could come true.

Would Sebastian marry me? Could he marry her? she pondered. A silence. Her thoughts were in a turmoil, and Stephanie tossed and turned in bed, unsure of how long she had been doing so. Finally, sleep overcame her. Outside, snowflakes were falling heavily, while inside, the room was warm and cozy. Stephanie slept soundly until after ten o’clock in the morning, when her phone automatically turned off its silent mode.

When the phone buzzed, Stephanie was still half-asleep. She groggily answered, “Hello?”

“Stefi.” Ella’s loud voice came from the phone, and Stephanie responded with a sleepy “uhm.”

“It’s already this late and you’re still not up, and you sound like you’ve been ravished or something?”

When Stephanie heard the word ‘ravished,’ she shuddered all over. She had indeed been “ravished.”

Ella said, “I have an exciting piece of news. Do you want to hear it?”

Stephanie didn’t answer and thought that there was nothing more exciting in the world than the fact that she had slept with Sebastian. But if Ella said it was exciting, then it must be exciting.

“What’s so exciting?”

“Wait, let me get closer. Listen for yourself.”

Stephanie was very puzzled. ‘Listen to what?’ she wondered. Soon after, the sound of Ella’s footsteps was followed by Olivia’s crying and Catlin’s hysterical anger coming through the phone.

“Given her condition, you’re discharging her? On what grounds are you discharging her? Do you want her to die?”

“Mrs. Hart, we are sorry, but there’s nothing more we can do for Miss Hart’s condition.”

Catlin roared angrily, “What do you mean there’s nothing more you can do? I spent so much money to get so many specialist teams. Where are they? Where did everyone go?”

“They all left!”

What came through the phone was a heated conversation between the doctor and Catlin. In just a few short sentences, Stephanie understood the whole story: the hospital wanted to discharge Olivia.

“Did you hear that? It’s exciting!” Vil’s voice came through again.

Stephanie replied, “It’s too exciting, but what happened?”
