Chapter 314

Rose Luxe was one of Long Harborโ€™s fancier spotsโ€”a ritzy mall packed with shoppers pretty much every day. Stephanieโ€™s eyelid twitched as she tapped her teacup with a finger. โ€œShouldnโ€™t Chad be at the hospital right now?โ€

โ€œExactly,โ€ Ella said, sounding totally baffled. โ€œTylerโ€™s messed up bad. Chad should be right there with him, no question.โ€

However, the guy was wandering around Rose Luxe like he didnโ€™t have a worry in the world.

Ella leaned in, dropping her voice to a sneaky whisper. โ€œIโ€™m telling you, Chad and that woman? Somethingโ€™s up. They looked way too comfortable.โ€

Stephanie frowned, repeating it slowly. โ€œWith a woman pushing a stroller? And they were cozy?โ€

Yeah, it didnโ€™t add up. Her stomach twisted a little. Chad wasnโ€™t some young hotshotโ€”did he end up in a mess like this?

Ella nodded hard. โ€œOh, for sure.โ€

Stephanie squinted. โ€œYou positive you didnโ€™t mix him up with someone else?โ€

She wasnโ€™t sold yet. For two years, sheโ€™d had Chad figured outโ€”he didnโ€™t seem like the type. Now she wondered if she had totally misjudged him. A tiny doubt started creeping in.

โ€œNo way,โ€ Ella fired back, dead sure. โ€œIt was Chad. I checked twice, three times even. Stared right at him.โ€

She smirked and leaned back with a shrug. โ€œOne quick look, maybe Iโ€™d goof. But every time? Come on, Iโ€™m not that dumb.โ€

Stephanie didnโ€™t say anything. The mug just hung there in her hand. Fair enough. This was big enough that Ella wouldnโ€™t screw it up. One slip? Sure, maybe. Every look? Nah, she wasnโ€™t that out of it.

After a pause, Stephanie asked, โ€œWhose kid is it?โ€

Ella laughed dryly. โ€œGirl, I just peeked at them for a bit. They seemed tight, yeah, but Iโ€™m not a mind reader. No clue if the babyโ€™s his.โ€

Stephanie went quiet again. In her head, Chad was always this serious, no-nonsense guyโ€”stiff as a board. With Caitlin, he was polite but distant, like they were strangers stuck at the same table. He didnโ€™t seem like the type to get caught up in romance or anything wild.

Then there was Tylerโ€”the golden boy, heir to the Hart Group. Heโ€™d been running things for years, handling the big deals. To Chad, Tyler was everythingโ€”untouchable, the top priority.

So why, with Tyler still stuck in the hospital, was Chad out playing family with some woman and a kid? It felt off to Stephanie, like a cheesy TV drama.

Stephanieโ€™s brow furrowed. โ€œHow cozy are we talking?โ€

Ellaโ€™s voice dropped again. โ€œShoulder-to-shoulder, practically cheek-to-cheek. You donโ€™t get that close with just a friend, you know?โ€

Stephanie didnโ€™t answer. Her fingers tapped the table lightly, her eyes narrowing. Yeah, this wasnโ€™t just friendly. It was obvious, in-your-face closeโ€”hard to ignore.

Back at the Hart place, Chad and Caitlin could barely sit on the same couch without it feeling awkward. Their hands didnโ€™t even come close.

Seeing Stephanie stewing, Ella gave her a playful nudge. โ€œWant me to poke around some more? Shake things up at the Hart house?โ€

Stephanie glanced at the snowflakes floating outside. The Hart family was a total train wreck as it was. If things were on schedule, Amber was probably at the hospital by now.

Stephanie shrugged faintly. โ€œWhy bother? Amberโ€™s on it.โ€

And donโ€™t forget Olivia, stuck in the States with no overseas treatment, or Tyler, about to get out of the hospital. The Hart family was a giant knot of chaos, top to bottom.

โ€œOh yeah, Amber!โ€ Ella smacked her forehead. Ella raised an eyebrow, still thrown. โ€œAmber,โ€ and laughed. โ€œHowโ€™d I blank on that disaster? This is getting way too crazy.โ€ Really that big a player?

Stephanie let out a sharp, sarcastic chuckle. โ€œIf she uses her baby as the leverage and fails, she may go crazy. And she may even pull the whole Hodge family down with her.โ€

Lilian was all in with Tylerโ€”serious feelings.

Ellaโ€™s eyes went wide. โ€œMan, sheโ€™s got some nerve.โ€

Stephanie gave a little hum, keeping it cool. โ€œI dug into Amber. Iโ€™ve got the scoop.โ€

โ€œShe had no idea about Tyler and Lilian before. Now that sheโ€™s clued in, sheโ€™s convinced Lilianโ€™s the one screwing up her plans. Whatโ€™s her next move?โ€ She threw it back with a sly grin.

Ella sucked in a breath. โ€œSheโ€™s gonna go after Lilian. Thatโ€™s like tossing a match on the Hart family dumpster fire.โ€

โ€œOliviaโ€™s already got the Harts and Ashfords clawing at each other,โ€ Ella said, shaking her head. โ€œIf Amber takes a swing at Lilian now, isnโ€™t that just begging to blow up the Hart family for good?โ€ Her voice kicked up, half-thrilled, half-shocked.

At this point, the Hart family was done forโ€”chaos louder than a packed Super Bowl watch party.

Stephanie picked up her teacup and took a slow sip. โ€œSo, about that womanโ€ฆโ€

Ella jumped in, practically bouncing. โ€œThat woman? Caitlin has got to know. Sheโ€™s got to guard whatโ€™s hers. Stefi, come on, youโ€™re not even thinking about your own โ€˜momโ€™ here!โ€

Stephanie blinked, totally caught off guard. โ€œHuh?โ€

Ella kept going, all hyped up. โ€œIโ€™m on it. Iโ€™m digging up everything on that chick.โ€

โ€œStefi, the Harts always say you pick the wrong side. This time, youโ€™ve got to stick up for YOUR mom.โ€ Her tone was firm, dripping with sarcasm.

Stephanieโ€™s jaw dropped. โ€œWhat?!โ€ She couldnโ€™t believe that Ella wanted her to team Caitlin. This was way off track.

The corner of Stephanieโ€™s mouth twitched. โ€œAlright, youโ€™ve got me there. I canโ€™t let some random swoop in and steal the show. Need to stand up for my โ€˜momโ€™ this time.โ€
