Reading Juicy Gossip in Her Mind
Chapter 128: Gossip at a Time Like This
Just then, Isabella spoke up. "Could it be you're apologizing under pressure, afraid of retaliation from Mr. Carey and Mr. Briggs? Your sincerity in the video seemed genuine to me." The onlookers were stunned. Isabella had struck a nerve. Someone would have to take the blame after such a public exposure. Perhaps the young girl was telling the truth.
Rebecca was shocked, as if a weight had been lifted. She stared at Isabella in astonishment. The mist cleared.
"No. I was just just talking nonsense. I really" The girl was bewildered, unsure whether to confess. She didn't know that spoken words were like spilled waterโeven if they evaporated, they couldn't be retrieved.
Initially, Taylor and Riley thought Isabella's persistent questioning genuinely suspected their involvement with Rebecca. But, scanning the crowd, they saw the expressions and realized something was amiss. Even if the accuser confessed, not everyone would believe it. Plus, tonight's events would be exaggerated in retelling. Taylor and Riley were furious, momentarily tempted to lash out at the girl. Then, they sighed, unconsciously glancing at Rebecca, wondering if industry rumors had always been this way.
Finally, Taylor and Riley overlooked the trouble Isabella had caused. They were relieved the incident had come to light, proving their innocence. Riley beckoned a seasoned cameraman, Mario. "Mario, could this possibly be true?"
Mario was speechless. "Definitely false. But the newbies probably don't know. Mr. Briggs is Mr. Carey's brother-in-law! How could they possibly conspire? Mr. Briggs would even protect Mr. Carey from other women! That's why Mr. Carey has had no scandals. He's a henpecked husband! Mr. Briggsโ" Taylor and Riley hastily silenced Mario. "Enough! It's enough to prove our innocence regarding Ms. Yancey."
Inwardly, Isabella was already bursting with laughter.
I intended for Mr. Carey and Mr. Briggs to come clean about their relationship, dispelling the rumors. I didn't expect so much to be revealed, but this certainly isn't my fault. Christopher and Danielle were aware of their relationship; their event's success stemmed from the backing of a successful businesswoman.
Rosalie, hearing this for the first time, smiled brightly. They could finally prove Rebecca's innocence. Looking at Rebecca, Rosalie saw her expression transform from a coquettish smile to youthful bewilderment. She looked like a prisoner who couldn't believe her good fortune.
Observing the reactions, Isabella knew she'd achieved her goal. "Well, if that's the case, then I believe you," she said, adding, "But what about you saying Ms. Yancey seduced your boyfriend?"
The girl was struck again. "I was wrong. My boyfriend only glanced at Ms. Yancey from afar. It was all my fault."
"Oh, why are you like this? Ms. Yancey is so innocent. You should be confronting your boyfriend, not causing trouble for Ms. Yancey. Why do women make things difficult for each other?" Isabella sighed, turning to Rebecca with a smile. "My apologies for misunderstanding you."
Rebecca replied, "No, I should be thanking you, Ms. Jeannet. Really, thank you." Her tone was markedly different, causing those familiar with her to look up. She restrained her emotions, appearing professional but with a hint of dazzle in her eyes. She wondered if Isabella's help meant their agency would sign her.
"Fortunately, everything's been brought to light. When things are clarified, there will be no more misunderstandings." Isabella smiled at Ruth. "It was an injustice for Ms. Yancey to be dragged into this. The truth will prevail!" Those on Isabella's side began to understand.
Isabella used this incident to remind Ruth of the negativity surrounding Rebecca, hoping she'd restrain herself instead of spreading rumors. When it was over, Ruth's eyes were red with anger as she saw her husband comfort Rebecca. She never expected Rebecca to approach her.
Previously, Rebecca had avoided Ruth, aware of the other wives' plan to sabotage her upcoming performance. This performance was a crucial gambleโher contract was ending, and it involved her grandmother's medical expenses. She didn't want unforeseen incidents.
"Mrs. Gonzales, I think there's a misunderstanding. I'm willing to explain." Rebecca said sincerely. Although she'd faced similar situations, she'd stopped subjecting herself to humiliation. She let others think what they wanted. But today, she wanted to argue.
Raising her head, she saw resentment in Ruth's eyes. "Misunderstanding?"
Rebecca's face fell. "I have never seduced Mr. Gonzales, nor did I want to destroy your marriage. I explicitly refused him. If you don't believe me, I'm willing to confront you both."
Ruth gave a grim smile. Confront? Hear her husband say he'd divorce her?
Rebecca saw her disbelief. "I swear, after this performance, I will no longer work with Mr. Gonzales. Mrs. Gonzales, can you believe I haven't seduced him?"
"Do you want me to believe you didn't seduce him?" Ruth refused to listen. "You're lying! If it weren't for your seduction, why would he be here? You wanted to prove your ability!"
"The company helped me sign up, and after filming, I haven't contacted Mr. Gonzales," Rebecca said, gnashing her teeth. "You can check all chat records."
"Then you shouldn't have participated! Your participation hints at it!"
Rebecca's eyes reddened. She didn't know why the company gave her this opportunity, but it was her best chance. Why give it up? She had no choice. "It's your conflict, why should I suffer?" Rebecca paused, knowing it was useless.
"I swear on my grandma's health I haven't given Mr. Gonzales any hint." Rebecca was near tears. "Heh, you're quite the filial one, aren't you? I bet even your grandma died from your curses several times over."
Rebecca's face changed. "You can insult me, but you can't speak ill of my grandma!"
Ruth was taken aback. However, she said, "I know why you've sought me out. But you can put that thought to rest. You've ruined my marriage, so I won't let you off the hook!" Ruth left.
Rebecca remained, pale. She didn't know what to say.
That night, Danielle posted insider revelations in various groupsโthe first step in clearing Rebecca's name. The next day's live stream generated buzz.
Isabella saw the posts but noticed the attention had already shifted to Rebecca's scandals. Old negative stories were dug up, hinting at manipulation. The drama would intensify. This seemed beyond the wives' work; revelations about Rebecca's past school days suggested attention-seeking troublemakers were exploiting the situation.
An hour before the live broadcast, everyone prepared. Isabella saw scandalous headlines trending, calling for Rebecca to leave the industry. Rebecca calmly looked at her phone. Gordon and Simon looked heavy-hearted; Ruth was absent.
Isabella was curious about Ruth's absence. She was about to enjoy the gossip when the production team announced they were going on set. Gordon approached Rebecca. "Rebecca, I have something to discuss. Let's talk outside."
Rebecca followed, confused. In an empty room, Gordon pulled out a ring box. "Rebecca, marry me."
In the makeup room, Isabella whispered, "Holy crap!" The Quirks, waiting for the show, were puzzled. Gossip at a time like this?
