Chapter 363: They Truly Are Your Siblings
It was speculated that Sarah and Nina had learned of Bennett's long-hidden misdeeds, prompting their departure. Sarah hadn't appeared until the day of the funeral, arriving with Nina and a protective circle of bodyguards, a necessary precaution given the presence of unsavory characters.
The Quirks, already aware of the circumstances, boycotted the funeral. They expected only Carlos to accompany his sister. Instead, a group of young people arrived, observing from the doorway without offering condolences, leaving the Eatons bewildered. The unexpected spectators piqued the curiosity of other guests, transforming the solemn service into an intriguing spectacle.
"Wow, the mistress and all the illegitimate children are here! They're so brazen. I knew coming was the right choice—what a show!" someone exclaimed.
Everyone except David and Selena (who remained at the Quirk estate with Callahan) had arrived, including the twins from Felix's family, eager to witness the unfolding drama. Janice, coerced into attending, felt dazed and unprepared for such a confrontation. She'd expected Sarah to let bygones be bygones, but Sarah's dramatic appearance ignited a burning sensation within her.
The memorial hall buzzed with activity. For the first time, Sarah confronted the mistress, Sloane, who, with a pitiful expression and a child on each side, approached Nina. "Nina, hello. Let me introduce you to your younger brother and sister. It's their first time meeting you. From now on, you only have each other. You must support—"
Before Sloane could finish, Nina, having already spoken with Sarah, coldly interrupted, "Ma'am, what are you talking about? I'm an only child."
A murmur of amusement rippled through the room. "I worried Nina couldn't handle this, but she's become a carbon copy of her mother! A man's betrayal truly catalyzes a woman's evolution, even between father and daughter. Poor Nina, burdened with pressures beyond her years. I wish I could scatter that scoundrel's ashes!"
Several stifled laughs echoed, turning Sloane pale with anger. Unable to retort, she turned to Sarah, troubled. "Sarah, it's all my fault. But the children are innocent. They're the closest in the world. You should explain it to Nina. Bennett always hoped the children could support each other. After all, they share the same—"
Before Sloane could finish, Sarah slapped her.
The resounding slap sent Sloane sprawling, eliciting gasps. The illegitimate children cried out, the eldest charging at Sarah only to receive a fierce slap from Nina. When they attempted further confrontation, the bodyguards intervened, silencing the outburst.
"Hmph! As a mistress, weren't you prepared to face the consequences? Why the tears now?" Sarah scoffed, staring coldly at Sloane. "Are you still stuck in your own little world? Do you fancy living in the past, serving as a concubine?"
(A whispered aside: "No, no, no, at most she's a mistress, definitely not a concubine.")
The Quirks, stifling laughter, maintained a composed demeanor, enjoying the spectacle.
Vera responded with agitation, "Do you really have to make a scene, Sarah? Don't you want my son to rest in peace?"
"Why would I want him to rest in peace? Does he deserve it?" Sarah retorted.
Terry turned to Nina, pleading, "Nina, don't let your mother's words cloud your judgment. They truly are your siblings. You must acknowledge them."
Nina's resentment intensified as she recalled a corporate lawyer's explanation: children born within wedlock are legally obligated to support younger siblings born out of wedlock.
