Chapter 364: Love and Wealth + Pearls
The thought of her grandparents choosing this moment to make their claim made Nina unbearably nauseous.
"I said, I'm an only child. Who are they supposed to be? Where's the evidence?" Nina retorted.
This remark surprised the legal novices present. What evidence? What could possibly prove their claim?
At that moment, the lawyer handling the inheritance division arrived. Sarah offered a cold smile. "Nina and I, along with Bennett's parents, are legally entitled to a share of the inheritance. However, anyone else wishing to participate needs to provide evidence. Oh, right, evidence isn't just about what you say. You claim they are Nina's siblings, implying they're Bennett's children. So do you have the paternity test results?"
Sarah's statement silenced the group.
Seemingly realizing something was wrong, Sloane dropped her pretense of weakness. Tears still on her face, she rushed to the lawyer, demanding, "You're Bennett's lawyer, aren't you? You know these are all Bennett's children, right? There's no issue with them participating in the inheritance division, right? You can't break the law just because you're afraid of the Quirks!"
The lawyer, visibly stressed by the mistress's confrontation, replied, "We certainly operate within the law, but if, as Ms. Sarah stated, these children haven't undergone paternity testing with Mr. Bennett, then they have no standing in the inheritance division."
It turned out this lawyer had previously worked with Sloane. Bennett had often used him to manage the mistress's and her children's housing and finances. However, due to confidentiality, the lawyer couldn't disclose this to Sarah, nor could he assist Sloane in any illegal activity. He would only act according to the law.
David's family finally understood Sloane's earlier confidence; she knew the lawyer. She'd assumed he was on her side, but he was simply doing his job.
Nearby, the twins, though unable to hear Isabella's thoughts, excitedly discussed the events.
"Sarah is truly impressive," Eula said. "Even then, she remained calm, considered everything, made quick decisions, and delivered the final blow!"
"It's a shame Bennett died so quickly," Jake remarked. "Given time, Sarah would have divorced him and left them with nothing. Now she has to split the assets with two old geezers. The thought is nauseating."
Janice, though silent, reflected on the situation. She was profoundly impressed. Sarah had willingly accepted an immediate divorce, leaving with only the clothes on her back. But what if the situation were reversed? Bennett would have resisted leaving empty-handed if Sarah had found evidence of his infidelity. Now, he'd lost the chance to contest the matter in court. Even if Sarah couldn't secure the entire inheritance through deception, she could ensure a lawful distribution. Sarah was fated to remain a widow, unable to pursue a divorce.
Understanding her situation, Sarah began strategizing to secure the best outcome for herself and her daughter.
Janice reflected that she would have simply hidden away in sadness and grief. She questioned, "Is there a point to any of this?"
Though whispered, her question was overheard.
"Of course! It's satisfying! If anyone dares to treat me like a fool, I'll make sure they end up the fool!" Eula declared. "If I'm not having a good time, no one else should expect to either."
"With love gone, should she just hand over the wealth as well? That would be unbearable," Evian said with a laugh.
"Exactly. Love is elusive and uncertain. It's hard to distinguish what's real and what's not," Rosalie said seriously. "But money, that's something tangible and truly belongs to yourself."
Janice was dumbfounded. Is that so?
Eula had always been this way, but Evian and Rosalie hadn't been in the past.
Alexander and Christopher felt as if they were hearing Isabella's thoughts as they listened to Evian and Rosalie. Isabella, however, was engrossed in watching a play.
Meanwhile, chaos erupted as the lawyer's words reverberated. Who could have foreseen the need for paternity tests? Bennett's sudden death had left no opportunity to address the issue. 1.8K
