Chapter 38: Nip the Problem in the Bud

Luna was utterly stunned. "How could this be?"

"She got it from Thomas," Christopher said, his expression shifting immediately. "I just found out, but everything I told you last night was true. If you don't believe me, I can get tested."

Luna's astonishment was instantly replaced by embarrassment.

At that moment, the manager seemed to recall something. His expression drastically changed, and he hastily left.

Realization dawned on the researchers. "Wait a minute. So that's why she was holding that syringe filled with a liquid that looked like blood! She was planning toโ€ฆ Don't tell me last night she was planning toโ€ฆ"

Everyone turned to look at Christopher in shock.

"Her target last night was Christopher, but now it's Luna. What a madwoman," Isabella sighed.

Christopher snorted. "Who knows? Anyway, we should all be on guard whenever she shows up in the future."

Luna was in a daze, finding it hard to fathom how things had ended up this way. Since it was an intentional assault case, they all had to stay and cooperate with the police interrogation before leaving.

Christopher's wound was severe and required stitches, so he was immediately taken to the hospital, accompanied by Hayden.

When Isabella stepped out of the police station, she spotted a tall, slender man standing by a black business car. He was clad in a grey overcoat, beneath which a glimpse of a black suit could be seen. Dressed meticulously, he stood rigidly straight. Under his thick, long lashes were profound, penetrating eyes that stared intently at the police station entrance, patiently waiting.

Though Isabella didn't have feelings for Alexander, she admitted to feeling a sense of security the moment he appeared.

Isabella approached him briskly. Instead of waiting, he walked over. His long legs covered a large distance as he strode toward her. She had barely taken a few steps when he reached her, scanning her from head to toe before asking, "Are you hurt?"

Isabella waved her hands. "No. Why are you here? I thought Hayden arranged for a lawyer. Once Christopher's wound is stitched up, he can be transferred back. Didn't he tell you?"

Observing Isabella's good spirits, Alexander knew she hadn't been traumatized. "I couldn't reach him. He's asleep from the anesthesia," he said.

"Shall we head to the hospital now?" Isabella asked.

Alexander nodded slightly.

Isabella called out to Thalia, and Luna strode up to them. Luna turned to Alexander and said, "I'm sorry. Christopher is injured because of meโ€ฆ"

"I understand the situation. It has nothing to do with you," Alexander said in a businesslike manner. "It's his duty to protect women as a man. Ms. Luna, you needn't worry. This won't affect the investment."

Isabella looked at Alexander in slight shock. He said this to avoid burdening Luna, who had just rejected Christopher, with feeling obligated to compromise because he saved her life.

Luna, grasping Alexander's meaning, lowered her gaze.

Thinking about his unfortunate younger brother, Alexander said, "We're going to pick up Christopher from the hospital. Would you like to come with us?" After all, Christopher had risked his life. Alexander hoped to lift his spirits by bringing Luna to visit him.

This time, Luna didn't hesitate. Just as she was about to go, her phone rang.

The call was from an unknown number, but she recognized Henry's yelling voice. Since she had blocked the Cowells' contacts long ago, she surmised he'd used someone else's phone.

"Luna, you ingrate! You ran away from home, and now you've caused your sister to suffer! You knew she was in poor health, yet you got involved with a dangerous man and let your sister take the hit! I know you hold grudges, but do you have to make your sister pay with her life? Get here now and look at what you've done!" Henry roared.

"Luna, come to the hospital now. Your sister has been stabbed multiple times by that lunatic, andโ€ฆ Please, come to see her!" Marjorie wept.

The couple sounded urgent, talking fast as if afraid Luna would hang up. The anxiety and solemnity in their tones made Luna frown. Did Bianca die?

Although she had given up on the Cowells, she'd never considered revenge. If Bianca died because of her, she felt she would be haunted for life. That feeling was akin to a nightmare.

The thought made Luna stagger, but Isabella steadied her. Unexpectedly, Isabella snatched the phone, ended the call, and turned it off.

"Isabella?" Luna stared blankly.

Isabella said, "I'm sure she's fine, or the officers would've mentioned something. Henry and Marjorie are probably venting their anger. I suggest you go back with your team and focus on the investment report. Ignore anyone who contacts you. Since you've cut ties with them, none of this has anything to do with you."

(Isabella's internal thoughts: You can't go! How many times have your parents deceived you? They're just waiting to take advantage of you!)

After some thought, Luna said, "But what about Christopher?"

(Alexander, hearing Isabella's inner thoughts, frowned. If anything happened to Luna, Christopher would be on edge.) He responded, "We'll explain the situation to him on your behalf. Once we're back, you're welcome to visit him anytime."

In the end, Luna left with the team, her phone switched off.

As soon as Alexander and Isabella arrived at Christopher's ward, he woke up. He was disheartened not seeing Luna.

Hayden couldn't bear to see Christopher like that and grumbled, "Christopher got injured saving her, and she didn't even visit him?"

Christopher responded coldly, "Hayden, don't say that. I know why she didn't come. She must be worried I'll use the fact that I saved her to guilt-trip her into accepting me. How could I do that? No, I need to contact her and clarify this."

Isabella arched an eyebrow. (These two brothers are on the same page.)

Christopher picked up his phone, remembering he was blocked. Just as he wallowed in disappointment, Alexander patted him on the head. "She wanted to come."

Christopher's eyes lit up.

(Isabella's internal thoughts: Yeah. She might refuse you, but she's still sensible.)

(Christopher's internal thoughts: Don't speak if you don't have anything nice to say!)

Alexander, who also heard this, was speechless.

"Why didn't she come then?" Hayden asked.

"Because Henry and Marjorie are here in the same hospital." The moment Alexander mentioned this, Christopher erupted in anger.

"Are they blaming Luna and want to pick on her again?" he asked.

(Isabella's internal thoughts: They not only want to pick on her. They want to use her as a spare part!)

Christopher's expression turned stormy, scaring Hayden.

Alexander frowned, hearing Isabella's internal rants. Bianca had been stabbed three times. Henry and Marjorie were in a hurry to summon Luna because two wounds damaged her kidneys. Bianca had always had weak kidneys, and now both were injured. While not immediately life-threatening, they wouldn't function normally. Hence, Henry and Marjorie planned to have Luna donate a kidney to Bianca. They also wanted a skin graft. The final stab disfigured Bianca's face, requiring a skin graft, but her body wasn't strong enough. They wanted to use Luna's skin because they are twins, minimizing rejection risk. (Isabella's internal thoughts: What peculiar parents they have. It's like they have the right to divide everything that belongs to their child. How disgusting!)

Before Isabella finished her internal rant, Christopher sprang up from the bed.

"Chris!" Hayden exclaimed.

Alexander frowned. "Calm down. I'll handle this."

Christopher was seething, his eyes bloodshot. "I've only injured my arm. I can still move. Damn it! I'm going to get rid of them and nip this problem in the bud!"

He rushed out of the ward.
