Chapter 49
Nicole turned her phone around, showing Lama and Talia a piece of trending news. It was about Edgar Wilder, a renowned traditional treatment doctor and heir to a family of such practitioners, who passed away at 3:00 pm today.
The name sounded familiar to Luna. She tapped on the news and quickly saw Edgar’s picture. “I know him. He’s Wilson’s mentor!” she exclaimed. In her past life, she recalled seeing a picture of Wilson and Edgar together at Wilson’s home.
“He’s more than that,” Jade said, emerging from the bathroom. “I planned to tell you after my shower, but I guess you already know. Mr. Wilder Senior is Professor Wilder’s father and Rhett’s grandfather. His wife, Wanda Stewart, used to be our vice principal. She was also Wilson’s consultant in cell biology. I’d even say Wilson owed his success to her and the Wilder family.”
Lana gasped. “But didn’t everyone say that Professor Wilder and Professor Hanley are nemeses?”
“That’s what happened after,” Jade frowned. “I have no idea what happened between them. The only information I have comes from older family members. From what I gathered, Wilson used to be extremely close to the Wilder family. He probably would have married one of them if it weren’t for an accident.”
Talia looked at Luna nervously. “Geez Louise. Is it possible that Professor Hanley and Professor Wilder hated each other because they used to be deeply in love? Is that why they became nemeses?”
“I feel a little uneasy for you, Luna,” Lana said.
Luna shook her head. “It’s not what you think. I’m sure of it. I believe Professor Wilder didn’t have any intimate relationship with Professor Hanley.” Although she hadn’t interacted much with Erin, Luna sensed Erin couldn’t possibly have had feelings for Wilson, especially considering Erin’s character.
It turned out Rhett and Suzie were off campus for the past two days because of the incident at the Wilder family home. Luna might have just joined the research team, but she wanted to pay her respects to Edgar, too.
“Jade, do you know where Mr. Wilder Senior’s funeral is being held? I would like to pay my respects,” Luna said, her appetite gone after hearing the news.
Jade nodded. “I do. I’m going there tomorrow. You can come with me.”
The Quirm family is one of the prestigious families in Velmora. Much like the Wilder family, they have a deep heritage, placing them in the same social circles. Meanwhile, the Monroe, Dalton, and Reid families were equally famous within those circles, but they weren’t as prestigious as the Quirm and Wilder families, and their descendants didn’t exactly mingle. That was why Jade wasn’t all that close with Rhett and the others.
The next morning, Luna wore all-black attire and tied her hair back. Then, she headed to the Wilder family home with Jade. When they were about to arrive, Luna got out of the car and went to a florist to buy a bouquet of gardenias.
“Once we’re there, I might have to join the Quirms and mourn Mr. Wilder Senior with them. Can you take care of yourself?” Jade asked, looking at Luna.
Luna nodded. “Of course. I won’t stay for too long. After I pay my respects, I’ll leave. It’s a bonus if I could see Professor Wilder and Rhett. Otherwise, it’s time to go. You don’t have to worry.”
The Wilder residence was very wide and spacious. They immediately parted ways once inside. Edgar was famous, and people from all sorts of industries were there to mourn him. Both the living room and the courtyard were packed with people. The main area in front of the courtyard was designated as the main funeral hall, and everyone was lining up to see Edgar one last time.
Luna took a deep breath, gripped the gardenias, and headed to the back of the line.
“Well, are you doing here?” An intimidating voice echoed in front of her. Raising her head, she saw Wilson glaring at her icily, as if he were very irritated. “I’m here to mourn Mr. Wilder Senior,” Luna replied calmly.
