Chapter 50
In her past life, Luna had never dared to meet Wilson’s gaze. She had always felt she didn't deserve to be his mentor, considering her knowledge and achievements, or rather, the lack thereof. Now, however, she felt no disappointment at the deep irritation in his eyes. Instead, she felt a sense of liberation she had long sought.
Luna didn't care about Wilson's opinion of her anymore. After all, she was no longer his mentee.
“Who do you think you are to be mourning Mr. Wilder Senior? Stop humiliating yourself here and get out of here right now!”
She suppressed the resentment and annoyance in her heart and cast a nonchalant glance at him.
“We’re standing in the Wilder residence, and I don’t think you have the right to tell me off. Moreover, I am Professor Wilder’s mentee now; I fail to see how mourning her father could be humiliating.”
Wilson didn’t expect Luna to retort. Worse, she remained nonchalant. Besides feeling shocked, his animosity toward her increased exponentially.
“I knew it. You’re a piece of lousy trash who dressed in shaggy clothes to win sympathy and garner attention. Now you’re manipulating the Wilder family with your devious tricks. Do you actually think you’re very smart and can fool everyone? Lama, I’m giving you a fair warning now. Stop wasting your efforts on schemes and petty tricks and start focusing on your studies. We can’t expect success in medical research by being cunning and crafty!”
How was having her own clothing style a crime? Luna was utterly speechless. Wilson’s point was completely irrelevant. Moreover, when had she ever pretended to be pitiful in front of her seniors? When had they doted on her?
Taking a deep breath, Luna gave Wilson a puzzling look. “Here’s wishing you find success in every medical research endeavor, Professor Hanley. I also pray that my seniors reach greater heights in their careers.”
In her past life, her seniors wouldn’t have progressed past a certain research bottleneck without her, let alone achieved the extraordinary success that followed. Luma had never been diplomatic or scheming enough. After they graduated from college, Wyatt was busy taking over the family business, and Russell was doing everything he could to remain in Velmora.
Trevor was constantly selling Luna’s thesis to clear a mountainous debt. Ethan networked with the rich and powerful incessantly. As for Kevin, he succumbed to alcoholism and lashed out at everyone around him.
Meanwhile, Luna remained in the lab, immersing herself in experiments, achieving one breakthrough after another. However, Wilson didn't acknowledge her contributions.
It begged the question: Did he deliberately ignore her efforts because of his biased opinion of her? What kind of mindset was he in to lecture her in such a self-righteous and entitled tone?
Wilson noticed that Luna didn't intend to leave; she stood at the back of the line of mourners. His expression darkened, and his eyes narrowed.
“Do you seriously have no idea what’s good for you? Someone like you doesn’t have the right to connect with the Wilders. Do you honestly think they’ll consider you one of their own just because you came here to mourn Mr. Wilder Senior? Do you fancy that it’ll help you graduate from college and achieve more than my team could?”
“I finally understood what was going on. Professor Hardy, are you scared?”
Was he worried that a former member of his team would eventually surpass his own team?
Before Wilson could reply, Khert intervened, snarling, “Wilson, you’re not welcome in my family, and my grandfather wouldn’t have wanted to see you either. I warn you to leave the premises immediately!”
Luna was speechless. Her eyes widened in shock. Khert’s welcome was less than warm. She swept her gaze across Wilson, hinting that he was the one who was unwelcome.
Wilson trembled with rage. “You’re just a brat. You don’t get to dictate things in the Wilder family. I’m here to mourn my mentor, and I don’t need your permission.”
Khert sneered. “It looks like I’ll have to kick you out of here!” Two men in black suits approached at Khert’s gesture.
Wilson felt utterly humiliated. It was common knowledge that respecting the dead took precedence over everything else. Although he had wronged the Wilder family years ago, he had had no interaction with them until now. Now that he was here to mourn Edgar, it was wrong of them to eject him from the Wilder residence. Only Bhett, who was utterly shameless, could have done something like this. Back then, he even wanted to join Wilson’s team. Talk about wishful thinking!
