Chapter 64

โ€œThatโ€™s just how he isโ€“kind of cold and all business, but heโ€™s honestly not a bad guy. He warms up once you get to know him, really,โ€ Claire laughed it off.

She added, โ€œJosie, weโ€™ll head back to the lab first. You stay here and chat with your roommate a bit longer. No rushโ€ฆโ€

Claire jogged after Sean.

Zoey said with a smile while giving Josieโ€™s hand a gentle squeeze. โ€œClaireโ€™s such a character. Youโ€™re really lucky, Josie."

โ€œYou canโ€™t fake the kind look on your face, and I can tell they truly care about you.

โ€œGo on, Iโ€™ll head back to the dorm.โ€

Josie nodded. โ€œJust think it over again about Aiden Brown.

โ€œI know itโ€™s a bit cruel, but youโ€™ve seen his attitude. Donโ€™t waste any more of your time on him, okay?โ€

โ€œYeah, I know,โ€ Zoey replied, giving her a little wave.

Josie wanted to say more, but couldnโ€™t find the right words. In her previous life, sheโ€™d seen just how heartbroken Zoey was after Aiden got married.

She understood that Zoeyโ€™s feelings for Aiden werenโ€™t something that could be cut off by a few harsh words.

This was going to take time.

Claire sneaked up behind Sean and gave his sleeve a little tug.

She said, โ€œHey, cousin, donโ€™t tell me youโ€™ve got your eye on the campus belle. Planning to pursue her or what?โ€

โ€œGo get a brain,โ€ Sean replied. He was weirded out by her thought.

Claire swatted at him. โ€œWhatโ€™s that supposed to mean? Are you calling me dumb?

โ€œWith the way you acted just now, anyone would get the wrong idea. Even Josie and Zoey probably misunderstood!โ€

โ€œTheyโ€™re not as bored as you are,โ€ Sean said while peeling her hand off his sleeve, โ€œRemember Colby Clem?โ€

Claire suddenly caught on. โ€œHe likes Zoey?โ€

โ€œI tried to get him to help out a while ago, but he kept making excuses about being busy,โ€ Sean shot Claire a frosty glance.

Claire burst out laughing. โ€œSo now youโ€™re trying to lure him in with a pretty face? If Josie finds out about your little honey trapโ€ฆโ€

โ€œWhat did I do?โ€ Sean replied, looking all innocent.

โ€˜He really does act like heโ€™s got nothing to do with it,โ€™ Claire thought.

Claire was practically in stitches.

She said, โ€œYou didnโ€™t do anything. You just got to play the good guy for once. Honestly, our campus heartthrob totally outshines any departmentโ€™s pretty boy.

โ€œThat loser Aiden isnโ€™t even worth a second of our campus belleโ€™s attention!โ€

Later that afternoon, the labโ€™s new cabinets and desks arrived.

Sean arranged for people to get everything set up, while Claire and Josie teamed up with rags and mops to give the place a thorough cleaning.

Before long, the lab equipment started arriving as well.

As they were hauling the equipment inside, something unexpected happened.

At the entrance to the lab, David was just about to head upstairs when he bumped into Delilah, who had come by to take a look around.

โ€œProfessor Wilcourt!โ€ David paused mid-step by the elevator.

He asked, โ€œWhyโ€™d you pick a lab on the first floor? Want me to have a word with the dean and see if we can get you moved upstairs?โ€

Delilah looked at him like sheโ€™d just heard the biggest joke ever.

She said, โ€œThis entire lab building was funded by the Reedshaw family. Do I really need you to talk to the dean about which lab I use?

โ€œOr do you think that now my fatherโ€™s gone, youโ€™re suddenly somebody important?โ€

โ€˜Otherwise, why would someone whoโ€™s kept their distance for so long suddenly come running over just to embarrass himself?โ€™ Delilah thought.

Davidโ€™s expression soured.

He said, โ€œI attended Leoโ€™s funeral. He was my mentor.

โ€œI wouldnโ€™t be where I am today without his guidance, and thatโ€™s something Iโ€™ll never forget.

โ€œBut it seems like youโ€™ve misunderstood me, so you prevented me from going to say my final goodbye to him.โ€

Delilah hadnโ€™t seen David at the funeral at all.

Sheโ€™d assumed he had enough self-awareness to stay away, but now it looked like someone had actually blocked him from barging in.

She thought, โ€œThank goodness for that. At least my mother didnโ€™t have to get upset by the sight of him.โ€™

โ€œWhoever was so thoughtful to keep you out really did us a favor. Iโ€™ll have to find a way to thank them properly later,โ€ Delilah said.
