Chapter 248

Jeremiah felt a multitude of emotions as he undertook the task of finding a wife for Barrett. He remembered the fanfare surrounding Barrett and Aurora's marriage—the glory, the anticipation, the high hopes of the court, and the common people's admiration for Aurora, who, despite her remarkable achievements, willingly accepted the status of a secondary wife. Barrett, deeply in love with Aurora, was also praised for securing her position as such. The victory at Victory Pass clouded everyone's judgment, leading to wild celebrations and a loss of reason.

However, as the excitement faded, the flaws in their story emerged. Barrett's primary wife proved even more outstanding than Aurora. People recalled the Duke of Northwatch's family's great contributions and the tragedy they suffered. Yet, Carissa, the primary wife, never received fair treatment; she was constantly surrounded by controversy. For example, accusations of neglecting her parents overshadowed her significant contributions at the Southern Frontier battlefield. The situation was only clarified later by the Astrology Department's minister.

While Aurora remained in the military, Carissa held a nominal position as deputy commander of the Mystic Army, requiring no active service. Clearly, Salvador had no intention of granting her a real command. Jeremiah understood Salvador's considerations, but his genuine regard for the Duke of Northwatch was sufficient. Carissa was initially the last remaining member of the Duke of Northwatch's family, but with Ryan's discovery, a successor existed. However, the family remained small, and Salvador was reluctant to risk further lives. This overriding concern overshadowed other matters.

Derek arrived at the Klein family's residence, Highcrest Estate, but didn't announce the news immediately, as Anthony was absent. He simply stated he would wait for Anthony's return. This alarmed the Klein family.

Smiling, Derek reassured them, "There's no need to worry. It's good news, but we must wait for the Marquis of Highcrest to return before discussing it. By the way, does the residence have a physician?"

Anthony's wife, Sophia, replied, "We do. The matriarch has been ill for a long time and requires constant medical attention."

Derek instructed Sophia, "Then Madam Klein should take a Heartshield Pill."

Sophia and her mother-in-law, Diana, were alarmed. With the men away, the women were left to make decisions, a less-than-ideal situation. Diana, Yvette's mother, had been in poor health since the deaths of her son-in-law and daughter. The news caused her heart to race; she felt she might need a Heartshield Pill herself.

Sophia summoned the household physician and then sent for the men. Derek rarely visited without important reason, so the gravity of the situation was clear. Sophia felt a mixture of anxiety and anticipation. The need for a physician hinted at something serious, leaving her worried yet hopeful.

Derek delayed explanation. Given Ingrid's fragile health, he feared the excitement might trigger a heart attack. He wanted the male members of the Klein family present before revealing the details. He initially planned to visit the Royal Citadel but reconsidered due to the crowds. Discussing the matter in such a crowded place, especially with Ryan still absent from the capital, could complicate things. Whether the Klein family shared the news with outsiders was their concern.

In less than an hour, the men of the Klein family returned, Anthony arriving last. The eldest Klein, Edward, Anthony's father, a calm man holding a position at the National Academy, was visibly anxious.

"Mr. Walker, please tell us, is there an edict from the King?"

Seeing most of the main branch of the Klein family present, Derek said, "His Majesty received word from Prince Rafael in Eldoria. There is good news, and His Majesty sent me to convey it to you first."
