Chapter 149: Love Lost and Locked Out
Last week, Easton had bluntly stated that Ellis could no longer affect him and should bother someone else instead. This indirectly told Victoria that he was divorced and she could legitimately reclaim her place. However, before Victoria could finish probing Eastonโs feelings, she was met with his icy glare.
โAre you and Morty both unable to understand plain English? I told you, donโt bring up my divorce with Ellis in front of me! What does our marital status have to do with outsiders?โ
Easton had never felt such an odd sensation of being poked in a sore spot, and it made him irritable. He was truly divorcedโfrom Ellisโno longer just contemplating it whenever she pushed for it.
โEaston, I was almost your wife, and we were engaged for many years, youโฆโ Victoria struggled to understand. To her, Ellis was someone Easton had been forced to marry, and mentioning their divorce shouldnโt have been a huge mistake.
Did Easton not view his divorce from Ellis as a good thing? Why did he get angry every time it was mentioned? This wasnโt the Easton she knew. The Easton she knew was ambitious and proud. Even when he failed to secure his place as the heir to the Hudson family, he didnโt lose his temper like he did today; he used to be someone who seemed above being disturbed by worldly matters.
Finally losing all patience, Easton pressed the intercom and commanded, โCome in, and escort the unwanted guest out of my office.โ
Victoriaโs face fell in shock. โEastonโฆโ
After hanging up the phone, Easton stared coldly at Victoria. โDonโt call me with such sweetness; youโre just a nobody.โ Unable to stabilize his emotions and plagued by insomnia, he was close to losing control. Victoriaโs continued presence and her familiar terms of endearment now sounded grating, even nauseating, to him.
Victoria was utterly confused about where she had gone wrong. Upon Eastonโs declaration of an intruder in his office, the security department quickly dispatched two personnel to the top floor. Before being escorted out, Victoria wisely left Eastonโs office herself, but Easton and Ellisโs divorce supposed to be my chance to shine! When she was kidnapped, Easton had been willing to pay 14 billion for her safety!
Puzzled by Eastonโs abrupt change, she asked a passerby, โWho is Taylor? Easton told me to find her.โ
Having been a frequent visitor, the staff of the CEOโs office knew Victoria well, and the person she asked eagerly led her to Taylor. Just after a meeting, and before administration had moved her to the new office, Taylor was temporarily located in a corner of the CEOโs office suite. Seeing a subordinate with Victoria, who looked every bit the affluent noble, Taylor had a good idea of her identity.
Without Victoria speaking, Taylor greeted her first with a smile, โHello, Ms. Victoria.โ
โAre you Taylor?โ Victoria dropped her previous pretense of dealing with Easton, speaking in a seemingly friendly manner but scrutinizing Taylorโs appearance. Plain-looking and dressed conservatively, Taylor seemed to be in her thirties.
Taylor nodded. โYes, Iโm Taylor! How can I assist you, Ms. Victoria?โ
Before Victoria could respond, two security officers suddenly appeared, asking Taylor, โWe received orders from Mr. Hudson about an intruder in his office. Can we go in and remove the unwanted guest?โ
Caught off guard and realizing they were referring to her as the intruder, Victoria felt a surge of nervousness.
Taylor frowned slightly. On my first day as Eastonโs assistant, is there already a lapse in security allowing unauthorized access to Mr. Hudsonโs office? Which fool caused this?
As Victoria asked for her, comparing the urgency of removing an intruder versus helping her, Taylor decided to address the latter first. โMs. Victoria, please give me a few minutes.โ
As she signaled the security officers to follow her to Eastonโs office, Victoria, under the watchful eyes of the staff, struggled to admit she was the intruder and fell silent. A few steps ahead and with her back to Victoria, Taylor missed her attempt to speak.
Upon entering Eastonโs office, they quickly scanned for the intruder, but found no one except Easton, who sat stern-faced at his desk. The security officers felt a chill down their spine. They had rushed to the top floor and only delayed a minute or two to ask Taylor, yet the intruder had vanished.
As the CEOโs assistant, where keeping sharp vigilance was essential, Taylor assured, โMr. Hudson, someone entered your office without permission; itโs a lapse by the CEO office staff, I will ensure it doesnโt happen again.โ
