Chapter 155: No Rest for the Romantic

Even if Carly really has my best interests at heart, canโ€™t she wait until Iโ€™m ready to date before introducing me to men! Why push me into another relationship so soon after I just escaped the disaster with Easton?

Maya comforted her. โ€œYou know what your aunt is like. Just listen selectively to her, ignore what you donโ€™t like, and donโ€™t bother with her.โ€

โ€œRight.โ€

Ellis had long stopped taking Carly seriously and didnโ€™t care anymore. As long as Easton didnโ€™t target her and Carly, Carly could live comfortably on the monthly funds from the Hudson familyโ€™s foundation. Carly wasnโ€™t in her twilight years yet, and if she upset Ellis, Ellis would just cut her off until she cooled down before dealing with her again.

โ€œIโ€™ve got some gossip thatโ€™s sure to cheer you up,โ€ Maya said, noticing Ellisโ€™s gloomy mood and pausing to pique her curiosity.

โ€œWhatโ€™s the gossip?โ€ Ellis was still distracted by Carlyโ€™s words, her mind only half there.

Another man to marry, what a painfully familiar phrase. The last time she went to the manor to ask Scott to help her divorce Easton, Easton had kept bringing up that phrase, confusing her completely.

Ellis pondered. Putting Carlyโ€™s recent comments together, could it be that Carly had discussed with Easton about finding me another man?

โ€œBree, the one who almost disfigured you, is in the hospital!โ€ Maya had never seen anyone as vicious as Bree, who had deliberately scratched Ellisโ€™s face, clearly intending to disfigure her.

โ€œSheโ€™s in the hospital, and thatโ€™s supposed to make me happy?โ€ Ellis didnโ€™t see the connection.

โ€œI heard she got disfigured!โ€ Maya couldnโ€™t guarantee the truth of the source, but given the Rivera familyโ€™s decline and their increasing troubles, rumors had spread that Bree had an accident that disfigured her face.

โ€œWhat happened?โ€ Ellis put down her spoon, showing curiosity.

โ€œI donโ€™t know the details, just that she got injured while riding a horse, and it messed up her face,โ€ Maya explained, having heard it from people at the equestrian center where she took a client.

โ€œSo, she got what was coming to her.โ€ Ellis hadnโ€™t forgotten the burning pain on her face, the days she spent locked at home until her injuries healed enough to go outside.

โ€œThe karma is real; you canโ€™t do wrong without it coming back to bite you.โ€

Maya looked at Ellis, surprised she wasnโ€™t more pleased. โ€œArenโ€™t you happy about it?โ€

โ€œAfter the week Iโ€™ve had, being disgusted by different people, Breeโ€™s misfortune doesnโ€™t really affect whether Iโ€™m happy or not.โ€ Ellis massaged her temples. โ€œAnd Morty, you know what? Heโ€™s such a scumbag!โ€

โ€œWhat did he do?โ€ Maya asked.

โ€œJust being really childish and obnoxious!โ€ Ellis recounted Mortyโ€™s recent disgusting behaviors, trying to understand his logic, but she was normal and couldnโ€™t comprehend his actions.

โ€œYouโ€™d think now that you and Easton are divorced, he wouldnโ€™t have a reason to bother you,โ€ Maya said, knowing Morty disliked Ellis because she was Eastonโ€™s wife, but it was sickening that Morty continued to harass her even after she left Easton.

โ€œMaybe itโ€™s Victoria stirring things up? I slapped her once; maybe Morty is retaliating for her?โ€ Ellis could only guess, since Victoria and Morty were from the same circle of friends.

โ€œEaston didnโ€™t retaliate for Victoria, but Morty did?โ€ Maya found that hard to believe.

Ellis had felt great telling her best friend about hitting Victoriaโ€™s first love.

First love, such a beautiful term, shouldnโ€™t be wasted on the other woman. And hitting Victoria wasnโ€™t entirely satisfying; ideally, she should have slapped Easton too, as a penalty for the couple hurting the legitimate partner.

โ€œYes, Easton just demanded an apology on the spot and never mentioned it again.โ€ Ellis propped her chin with her hand, tilting her head as she looked at Maya. โ€œJustโ€ฆโ€

Itโ€™s a confusing world! She frowned. โ€œAnnoying, what a mess.โ€

โ€œMaybe Victoria is using Morty to get back at you?โ€ Maya speculated on why Morty kept bothering Ellis. โ€œAre Morty and Victoria particularly close?โ€

โ€œNot sure.โ€

Ellis had deliberately avoided too much contact with Eastonโ€™s friends. That circle wasnโ€™t one she could easily blend into, and with Morty often speaking ill behind her back, she hadnโ€™t paid much attention to how close he was with Victoria.

Letโ€™s just block the trouble like a dam stops water! Mortyโ€™s behavior doesnโ€™t seem too extreme yet, so donโ€™t make a fuss and quit in a huff. Jobs that pay an annual salary of 140,000 dollars are incredibly hard to come by. Maya herself would love a fast track to a salary like that, but miracles donโ€™t just appear out of thin air.

โ€œDefinitely. I know which side my bread is buttered on.โ€

After a deep conversation with her best friend, Ellis felt much less disgusted. She leaned toward the idea that Morty was deliberately making trouble as a way to get back at her for Victoria.

Would I regret hitting Victoria? Not in the slightest.

Ellis refused to let Carly arrange her second marriage, but Carly didnโ€™t listen, and the day after calling Ellis, she and a group of friends sat in the rooftop garden, enjoying tea, snacks, and casual conversation.
