Chapter 157: Say Yes to the Mess
After the party ended, everyone left the Hudson mansion one by one. On the way home, someone initiated a chat group specifically to discuss Carly not being invited.
โIsnโt Carly too old to see clearly, or does she have a soft spot for Ellis?โ
โIntroducing Ellis to our son, really?โ
โDonโt even think about it: is Ellis really a match for him?โ
โMarried to the former CEO of Hudson Group and got nothing valuable, bringing home a divorced woman as a daughter-in-law would just embarrass the family.โ
The chat group started by ridiculing Carlyโs attempt to pair her sons with Ellis, gradually shifting to other gossip and eventually spreading the news of Ellis and Eastonโs divorce.
High society had already agreed that Victoria would replace Ellis as Eastonโs wife. Lately, rumors swirled that Easton couldnโt stand Ellis filling the spot meant for his true love and kicked her out. Today, Carlyโs gossip confirmed it, and the juicy news needed to be shared.
One downside of a small circle is that any small whisper can ignite quickly. Within hours, the news reached Sophia. Others might dismiss it as false, but who knew better than me whether my son had divorced Ellis?
Being the subject of rumors wasnโt pleasant. Sophia casually investigated the source of these whispers. To her shock, she found the rumors were true.
She immediately called Easton, her tone harsh, โEaston, you little rat! You told me you were thinking of reconciling with Ellis, and now youโre divorced? So you were lying to me all along!โ
Easton received a call from Sophia, who started by scolding him about the divorce. His expression barely changed, just a slight furrow of his brow. Had Ellis told my mom about our divorce?
What was bound to come, did. The day he processed the divorce, he guessed Sophia would confront him.
โIt was Ellis who insisted on the divorce; you canโt blame me.โ
As he spoke, an unfamiliar voice echoed, โYou rushed the proceedings. You could have dragged it out untilโฆ until Ellis changed her mind about the divorce, and we remained married, life was unchanged.โ
The voice, despite sounding unfamiliar, was his own. After days of insomnia and severe sleep deprivation, Easton felt the negative effects, including auditory hallucinations, which nonsensically suggested he might regret the divorceโa laughable idea!
The divorce was a clear, rational decision. Ellis meant nothing to him; he didnโt love her. They had simply shared a roof for three years, a fixed part of his life that wasnโt easy to change. What is there to regret?
Compared to dealing with someone constantly nagging and throwing tantrums, his current life was peaceful and free.
โIf I werenโt suffering from insomnia, life would be perfect,โ Easton replied calmly, which only infuriated Sophia further. โA perfectly good wife, and you grant her wish for a divorce just like that? Now youโre single, are you happy?โ
Not just the divorce upset her, but also being the last to know. If no one had told her, sheโd still be in the dark, helping her son dissuade Ellis from divorcing.
Being single was like two sharp darts flying directly at him. Although Easton dodged, the darts grazed his wrist, leaving a mark. A slight pain swept through his arm, and he pressed his lips together tightly. โMom, just because your son is divorced doesnโt mean heโll be a bachelor forever. What woman canโt I, Easton, have?โ

โNo way.โ
โYou little rat!โ
โUnlessโฆโ
Before he could finish, Sophia urged, โSpit it out!โ
Easton scoffed. โUnless Ellis begs for mercy, admits she was wrong to ask for a divorce, and says she canโt live without me. Maybe then Iโd consider reconciling.โ
From the moment the divorce was finalized, he had no intention of getting back together. The divorce had cost him nothing; if anything, Ellis was the one who lost a lot.
Sophia fought the urge to act like the wicked stepmother, reminding herself she was his mother. โYou rat, Ellis dumped you, and you still act so high and mighty? Go and make things right with Ellis, and donโt make me come over there!โ
Being dumped was more humiliating than being single, and Eastonโs face darkened at the words. Even though it was his mother on the other end of the line, he couldnโt continue the conversation.
